The field of Media and Public Affairs focuses on the dynamic interactions between media, government, the public and society and how meanings and values in these spheres are shaped as a result. The Bachelor of Media and Public Affairs is uniquely placed to prepare students for entry into the professional fields of public affairs and political communication given its location in the heart of the country's political landscape, Canberra. It provides an in-depth exploration of global public communication with a local perspective through multi-layered involvement with the national capitals political and political media institutions. The major in Communication Studies provides students with a broad understanding of the communication industries, theories and research, while the major in Media and Public Affairs develops an informed and critical understanding of how the media operate, and the skills needed to work in the contemporary media environment. Key topics include: media, politics and government; digital and global communication; public opinion and media consumers. Special attention is paid to the development of high level oral and written communication skills as well as to an appreciation of the power of visual communication forms. The Bachelor of Media and Public Affairs offers opportunities for workplace learning through internships in a range of local and national institutions and provides an excellent introduction to communication and media research for those wishing to pursue an Honours degree. The aim of the Bachelor of Commerce program is to develop business professionals who have the relevant knowledge and skills for admission to their respective professional communities but who are also equipped to solve problems within a multi-disciplinary business environment. Graduates will appreciate their chosen discipline in the context of the wider social, legal, economic and political environment. Students select one of the following Commerce majors: Accounting; Banking &Financial Service; Business Administration; Economics; Financial Planning; Human Resource Management; Information Systems; International Business; Marketing Management; Public Sector Management; Tourism Management.
Professional accreditation
For the Bachelor of Commerce: This course is accredited by CPA Australia and the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ). The Financial Planning major is accredited by the Financial Planning Association of Australia (FPA).

- From Semester 1 2018 unit 5617 Accounting for Managers is no longer offered. Students complete unit 11009 Business Decision Making instead.
Note:
- From Semester 1 2018 students not completing the major in Marketing, Marketing Management or Business Administration, may choose to complete an Open Elective unit in lieu of 6357 Intro to Marketing.
- Commerce students seeking accreditation by professional Accounting bodies or the Financial Planning Assoc must pass Intro to Economics & (Accounting for Managers or Business Decision Making).

- From Semester 1, 2015 9799 Foundations of Professional Planning replaces 9437 Foundations of Research & Creative Inquiry. Students who have not previously passed 9437 are now required to pass 9799.

| Skills Graduates will develop: the cognitive skills required to critically analyze, evaluate and synthesize concepts and theories acquired in media and public affairs plus one or more of the commerce discipline areas identified above; the technical and generic skills required to master a range of communication skills and media research methodologies as well as apply discipline-specific technologies in one or more of the commerce discipline areas; the independent learning skills needed to stay up-to-date with advances in theoretical frameworks and professional practices after graduation; the personal skills required to provide professional advice in the discipline or disciplines they choose to study. Graduates will be able to exercise critical thinking and applied analytical skills in identifying which information is relevant to specific decisions being made. They will also be able to identify whether they have all relevant information when advising clients or management, and have the ability to succinctly request or obtain missing information; the communication skills needed to present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas to a variety of stakeholders using technical and non-technical language, depending on the audience. |
