Widening Participation Programs
The University of Canberra (UC) is committed to student equity in higher education, providing opportunities to people from a range of backgrounds. Within Student Administration & Planning, the Widening Participation Team manages delivery of several UC outreach initiatives. These are externally funded through the Australian Government's Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Programme.
Since 2010, UC's Outreach Initiatives have supported raising aspirations, achievement and participation of secondary students from low socio-economic and Indigenous backgrounds. These programs aim to break down barriers to accessing and succeeding in higher education.
The Widening Participation Team, including current UC students, works with participating secondary schools across the ACT and NSW. Within these schools we aim to engage students who have:
- a rural and/or regional background;
- an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background;
- a history of financial disadvantage; and/or
- little or no family experience of higher education.
UC's Outreach Initiatives involve delivery of targeted activities, both within the school and onsite at the UC campus. In doing so, we aim to encourage post-school educational opportunities among participating students. Students who commence their studies at UC are further supported by Student Engagement to help them to thrive at university.
