Have you heard the exciting news? Canberra was just ranked the world’s top city in terms of quality of life! That’s right, it’s the best place in the whole world to live, according to the 2025 Oxford Economics Global Cities report.
Let’s break down why Canberra is such an awesome place to live for UC’s international students!
One of the major reasons why Canberra is such a great place to live is the reasonable cost of living – it’s one of the most affordable cities in Australia.
Importantly, rental prices are relatively stable. While rental prices in other Australian cities have been inflating quickly or unpredictably in recent years, renting accommodation in Canberra has stayed at a flat rate. This means no nasty surprises for renters!
It’s also super easy for international students to rent in Canberra. Universities such as UC offer an accommodation guarantee so you don’t need to worry about finding a place to live while studying.
People who live in the ACT are well connected to their local governance institutions. Around three-quarters of people living in Canberra believe that the ACT Government respects and protects human rights. Members of the Canberra community also trust their government, which involves trusting that the government will do the right thing, by listening and responding effectively to its community.
Canberra is Australia’s most sustainable city and one of the most sustainable cities in the whole world! The city has achieved a 100% renewable energy supply, demonstrating its commitment to protecting the environment.
Cycling is very popular in Canberra, which means there are fewer cars on the road and less pollution overall. Electric vehicles are also popular, which reduces pollution even further.
In such an environmental city, it’s easy to find somewhere green and relaxing. The city centre is filled with parks, like the National Arboretum, where you can take a study break, hang out with friends or get some gentle exercise. There are also loads of national parks just outside Canberra if you want to take a short trip to get out of the city.
Canberra is one of Australia’s best-educated cities. It’s home to several of Australia’s top universities, including UC, and there’s a really high proportion of students living there. This means that Canberra is a hub for academia, creativity, innovation and progress. It’s a great place to study and network as you pursue your dream career!
Canberra is home to two of the country’s biggest employers: the Australian Government and the ACT Government. The city also boasts Australia’s highest employment rate and Australia’s highest average income, which means it’s the best place in the country to find work in your chosen field once you’ve completed your studies.
For all the reasons we’ve listed above, the quality of life in Canberra is the highest in the world! But there are more great reasons to live in Canberra.
One reason the quality of life is so high is that there’s so much to see and do in Canberra! It’s Australia’s cultural hub, home to a rapidly growing arts scene and some of Australia’s best museums and galleries, like the National Museum of Australia, the National Gallery of Australia and the National Portrait Gallery.
Canberra is also very multicultural, which means it’s a fantastic and welcoming home for international students. It’s easy to find your home cuisine and supermarkets that stock your favourite foods, as well as discover other cuisines at a wide variety of restaurants. Canberra also hosts a range of multicultural festivals like the National Multicultural Festival – the Canberra community loves celebrating all the cultures of the world!
Regardless of what you want to study at UC, there’s no doubt you’ll live a comfortable, enjoyable and fulfilling life here in Canberra!
