UC OPEN DAY FEST
Sat 20 Sept, 9am - 3pm
At long last, the cold winter months are behind us. Spring is here, which can only mean two things — warmer weather is on the way, and it’s time to get outdoors!
Thankfully, Canberra has some of the world’s most stunning natural environments right on its doorstep. From incredible wildlife encounters to vibrant festivals and hikes that are breathtaking in more ways than one, there are plenty of ways to get out and about.
Can’t wait to get started? Check out this handy guide to experiencing the beauty of spring in the ACT.
If you love animals, or just want the chance to spot some of Australia’s cutest critters in their natural habitat, spring is the perfect time. Not only does the warmer weather mean animals are more active, but it’s also the perfect time to spot some babies!
The best way to catch a glimpse of some amazing creatures is to visit one of the ACT’s many reserves. Just an hour from the city, Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve is home to lots of native species, including kangaroos, platypus, echidnas and emus, and it’s the only place in the ACT that you can find the brush-tailed rock-wallaby. Make sure you take a stroll along the Koala Path keeping an eye out for koalas!
Closer to home, you’ll be sure to spot a few native animals on a stroll through the National Botanic Gardens or Mount Majura. And, with more than 50 nature parks all around the ACT, you’ll never run out of great spots to encounter some animals!
After a winter spent inside, spring is the perfect opportunity to get some exercise, fresh air and sunshine.
And you don’t even need to go far to find it, as some of the ACT’s best walks are right here in Canberra. In particular, we recommend checking out:
Looking for a more serious hike? Fear not! Plenty of the ACT’s many amazing nature parks have walking and hiking trails suitable for different levels of fitness and experience. We recommend starting with the Mount Ainsley Summit Walk, a moderate-difficulty trail right next to Canberra.
Australia’s landscapes are stunning, but they can also be harsh. That’s why it’s important you understand bushwalking safety before you go.
Some key tips include:

It wouldn’t be spring without the city’s annual multicultural celebration, the Moon Festival. Enjoy everything from tantalising street food to brilliant lantern displays and fun activities, all held from 5 to 7 September!
For some eco-friendly fun, check out the Spring Sustainability Market on 28 September. Get hands-on to learn about waste reduction, conservation, sustainable living and more.
Celebrate spring in style with Canberra’s iconic flower festival, Floriade. Held from 13 September to 12 October, you can check out the bountiful blooms and dazzling displays for yourself in Commonwealth Park.
More of a night owl? Floriade’s ‘dark side’, NightFest, is back each evening from 2 to 5 October. Don’t miss your chance to soak up the breathtaking illuminations, roving performers and awesome live music.
