The worlds of technology and art are becoming increasingly interconnected.
Sitting within the University of Canberra’s (UC) Faculty of Arts and Design, Workshop7 allows School of Design and the Built Environment students and collaborators to prototype and develop projects, with a mission to blend traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge digital fabrication techniques.
The space houses an expansive suite of technology to assist and support students in gaining hands-on experience and fine-tuning their skills.
Equipment includes 3D printers, laser cutting and VR technology, plus manual tools and machinery like saws, welders, painting facilities and an electronics room.
Let’s learn more about this innovative space.
From 3D printing and CNC manufacturing to robotics tools, Workshop7 is home to technologies, equipment and expertise to further students' education.
The facility doesn’t just focus on digital fabrication; it also offers a wide array of manual tools like a Multicam CNC Router for materials such as wood, foam and soft metals, a composites lab to process carbon fibre and other fabrics, and a Universal Robots UR10e robot arm to craft and construct materials that would otherwise be too complex or tedious to complete using traditional techniques.
Assisting in both digital and analogue processes allows students to gain a thorough understanding of the creation of art and design works.
The Faculty of Arts and Design emphasises a hands-on approach to learning. Students are encouraged to utilise the tools and technologies available at Workshop7 to build on their knowledge and expand their creativity through an exploration of material processes.
The practical skills and first-hand experience working with equipment give students an advantage when starting their careers, and help promote innovation and critical thinking.
Workshop7 opens its doors to all students from the School of Design and the Built Environment. Disciplines encompass Industrial Design, Architecture, Construction, Building Information Modelling and more, and include domestic and international, undergraduate and postgraduate students, varying in age and background.
The collaborative nature of Workshop7 means students from different walks of life can come together to share ideas, skills and inspiration.
Over the years, there have been many notable projects, achievements and alumni who have utilised Workshop7 to push the boundaries of art and design. Some of these include:
The award-winning Re-pete
In 2022, a team from the University’s Faculty of Arts and Design took out the top prize for their submission in MPavilion’s chair design competition.
Titled ‘Re-pete’, the design was set to address the issues of waste, recycling and material stewardship, and was created from robotic fabrication and hyper-mobile manufacturing.
ID7
Industrial Design students used 3D printing technologies to develop hyper-personalised glasses for the UC Eye Clinic.
Made in collaboration with the Faculty of Health, the initiative, named ID7, aimed to disrupt the eyewear industry by creating a product where consumers were directly involved in the design process.
