Are you excited to start your study journey in Australia? The University of Canberra (UC) is one of Australia’s top universities and offers over 200 courses across a range of subjects and disciplines.
If you’d like to study at UC, read on to find out all about UC’s admission process and how to best prepare yourself for success when applying for UC courses.
Katie Bhagat, Admissions Manager, and Cathy Meng, Associate Director, Global Admissions, are two of the key people managing admissions at UC for international students. They explain that UC has made its admissions process really straightforward. You’re making an incredible and exciting decision to study overseas, and UC can’t wait to welcome you, so the application stage needs to be as easy as possible.
“We have a dedicated page on our website for future international students with information on how to apply and our key application dates,” they explain.
First, you’ll need to find an agent. UC is represented by agents all over the world who can help you select your perfect course. Once you’ve chosen your course, your agent will help you with all aspects of the application process.
“We work very closely with our agent partners to ensure they have regular updates on our admissions processes to assist students,” say Cathy and Katie.
Next, you need to check the entry requirements for your course, including academic, English and Genuine Student requirements.
Then, you’ll need to prepare the required supporting documents, which might include transcripts from previous study, English test results and evidence of relevant professional experience.
UC can support you with this if you need help!
Once you’ve completed the above steps, you’ll be ready to apply to UC through the online application portal.
Your application is assessed by a UC Admissions Officer and an initial outcome is sent to you and your agent. This is typically a letter of offer, sometimes with conditions such as completion of current study with a minimum mark.
For many applications, UC conducts a Genuine Student (GS) assessment to make sure students meet UC’s GS requirements. This usually involves the student completing a survey, providing supporting documentation, and completing a telephone interview with the admissions team.
“This gives the student the opportunity to explain their study motivations and future career plans,” explain Katie and Cathy.
If you meet the academic and Genuine Student requirements, you’ll receive an unconditional offer, which you can accept online.
Next, you’ll need to pay a tuition fee deposit, which is equivalent to your first semester tuition fees.
Finally, you’ll receive a Confirmation of Enrolment to apply for your student visa. Your international student journey is well underway, now!
UC is dedicated to providing students with a result as soon as possible, so you won’t have to wait too long. Within 5 business days of applying to UC, you’ll receive the initial outcome. Then, if you need to complete a GS assessment, this will be completed within approximately 15 business days.
If your application is rejected, you can ask your agent for advice or reply via email requesting further support or advice, share Cathy and Katie.
“We are always looking for options to admit students to a suitable course. If they do not meet the admission requirements to their preferred course but there is a suitable alternative, such as a diploma pathway, we will offer the student the alternate course to minimise rejections,” they explain.
Here are Katie and Cathy’s top tips to help you achieve application success and begin your study journey at UC:
“Make sure you research the course you wish to study and have a clear understanding of the career outcomes,” say Cathy and Katie.
It’s important to have all the relevant documentation on hand and ready to go when applying. This might include academic qualifications, English tests and your immigration history.
Cathy and Katie recommend that you apply early, if possible, to avoid peak periods.
“We can issue conditional offers which allow you to apply before you have completed your qualification,” they explain.
A conditional offer will give you peace of mind that you already have a place at UC while you finish your current studies.
The admissions team is here to help if you have any questions at all about applying to UC.
“Do not hesitate to contact our team if you have any questions. We are here to support you and will do everything we can to ensure that you receive a favourable outcome!”
