25 September 2014: The University of Canberra Capitals have signed Abbey Wehrung for the upcoming 2014/15 WNBL season.

The 18-year-old point guard, who is the youngest player in the team, said she was excited to make her WNBL debut with the University of Canberra Capitals.

"It's awesome, I was a little bit nervous to begin with but it's sunk in now that I'm part of the team and I feel comfortable," she said.

Wehrung, who played for Ballarat Rush in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) last season, said she's looking forward to playing alongside superstar Lauren Jackson and veterans Jess Bibby, Abby Bishop and Kristen Veal.

"I feel like I've learnt so much already, there's so much experience in the team to draw from," she added.

Head coach Carrie Graf said: "Abbey's size, basketball IQ, and work ethic were all key elements in us recruiting her to the UC Capitals."

"She has a bright basketball future ahead of her, and we plan to work with her to develop her game over the next three years."

Wehrung was part of the emerging Australian Opals squad to tour China last year, and represented Australia at the FIBA under-17 World Championships in 2012.

The University of Canberra Capitals were established on 16 May, taking over from Canberra's former WNBL team. The correct way to refer to the team is as the University of Canberra Capitals.

The University of Canberra Capitals will play a pre-season game against the Sydney Uni Flames in Nowra on Saturday, and start their WNBL season with a double-header against the Melbourne Boomers on October 17 and the Sydney Uni Flames at the AIS on October 18.
