From diploma to degree, guaranteed

The Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) and the University of Canberra (UC) share a commitment to practical, hands-on learning and to helping people build real careers.

These guaranteed pathways recognise the value of vocational education and the skills students bring from CIT. Eligible diploma graduates will receive guaranteed entry and credit toward a UC bachelor degree—saving time, reducing costs and continuing their study with confidence.

Bachelor of Nursing

Graduates who have successfully completed a Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) at CIT are guaranteed a place in the Bachelor of Nursing (364JA.2) course at UC and will get 24 credit points (1 year of credit), subject to the below conditions.

1. Course quotas and intake availability
The Bachelor of Nursing course at UC is subject to strict quotas as mandated by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC). While UC guarantees admission to eligible CIT graduates, it does not guarantee placement in a specific intake. If the preferred intake is full, the student will be offered a place in the next available intake.

2. International student requirements
International applicants must also meet the Genuine Student (GS) criteria as required by the Department of Home Affairs.

3. Recency of qualification
(a) The Diploma of Nursing must have been completed within 5 years of application to UC to ensure currency of knowledge and skills.
(b) Graduates with older qualifications may still be offered a place but will not be eligible for credit.
(c) Must be a current Enrolled Nurse registered with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Bachelor of Business

Graduates who have successfully completed a Diploma of Government (PSP50116 and PSP50122) at CIT are guaranteed a place in the Bachelor of Business (MGB109) course at UC and will get a varying amount of credit subject to the below conditions.

1. Specialist Major in Accounting, 33 credit point option
Students who choose to do the 33 credit point Specialist Major in Accounting will be eligible to receive 15 credit points (5 units of credit).

2. Specialist Major in Accounting, 39 credit point option
Students who choose to do the 39 credit point Specialist Major in Accounting are encouraged to apply for a standard offer and contact the BGL Education Team after acceptance regarding their eligibility for a reduced amount of credit.

3. Other specialist majors
Students who wish to do any of the below specialist majors will be eligible to receive 24 credit points (1 year of credit).

  • SM0017 Business Economics*
  • SM0022 Human Resource Management
  • SM0023 International Business
  • SM0024 Management
  • SM0025 Marketing
  • SM0095 Government
*Students commencing in Semester 2 who wish to complete Specialist Major in Business Economics (SM0017) will require an additional semester of study part time to complete this major (2.5 years total).

4. Recency of qualification
Valid for Diploma completed within 10 years of application to UC.

5. International student requirements
International applicants must also meet the Genuine Student (GS) criteria as required by the Department of Home Affairs.


Bachelor of Government

Graduates who have successfully completed a Diploma of Government (PSP50116 and PSP50122) at CIT are guaranteed a place in the Bachelor of Government (SCB401.1) course at UC and will get 24 credit points (1 year of credit), subject to the below conditions.

1. Recency of qualification
Valid for Diploma completed within 10 years of application to UC.

2. International student requirements
International applicants must also meet the Genuine Student (GS) criteria as required by the Department of Home Affairs.

Bachelor of Design

Graduates who have successfully completed a Diploma of Graphic Design (CUA50720) at CIT are guaranteed a place in the Bachelor of Design (AR0007.1) with a Specialist Major in Visual Communication Design (SM0012) at UC and will get 24 credit points (1 year of credit), subject to the below conditions.

1. Specialist Major exclusions
This credit arrangement is only for students who wish to select the Specialist Major in Visual Communication Design (SM0012) as part of the Bachelor of Design. The credit allocation for other Specialist Majors (Game Development, Industrial Design and Interaction Design) will need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. 2. International student requirements
International applicants must also meet the Genuine Student (GS) criteria as required by the Department of Home Affairs.

3. Recency of qualification
Valid for Diploma completed within 10 years of application to UC.

4. Open elective requirement
To satisfy the University's Level of Study requirements, students must complete one Level 3 open elective as part of their course of study at UC.

Bachelor of Early Childhood and Primary Education

Graduates who have successfully completed a Diploma of Early Childhood and Care (CHC50121) at CIT are guaranteed a place in the Bachelor of Early Childhood and Primary Education (326JA.4) course at UC and will get 24 credit points (1 year of credit), subject to the below conditions.

Graduates who have successfully completed earlier training packages within the past 10 years such as Diploma of Early Childhood and Care (CHC50113) are guaranteed a place in the Bachelor of Early Childhood and Primary Education (326JA.4). However the Faculty will assess your completed qualifications to determine your eligibility for credit.

1. International student requirements
International applicants must also meet the Genuine Student (GS) criteria as required by the Department of Home Affairs.

2. Recency of qualification
(a) The Diploma of Early Childhood and Care must have been completed within 5 years of application to UC to ensure currency of knowledge and skills.
(b) Graduates with older qualifications may still be offered a place but may not be eligible for credit.

Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Birth to Five)

Graduates who have successfully completed a Diploma of Early Childhood and Care (CHC50121) at CIT are guaranteed a place in the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Birth to Five) (EDB001.1) course at UC and will get 24 credit points (1 year of credit), subject to the below conditions.

1. International student requirements
International applicants must also meet the Genuine Student (GS) criteria as required by the Department of Home Affairs.

2. Recency of qualification
(a) The Diploma of Early Childhood and Care must have been completed within 5 years of application to UC to ensure currency of knowledge and skills.
(b) Graduates with older qualifications may still be offered a place but may not be eligible for credit.

Students seeking to complete a major in Accounting or Accounting & Finance will be required to complete additional units of study and teaching periods to complete this degree.

Bachelor of Government

Graduates who have successfully completed a Diploma of Leadership and Management (BSB50420 and BSB51918) at CIT are guaranteed a place in the Bachelor of Government (SCB401.1) course at UC and will get 24 credit points (1 year of credit), subject to the below conditions.

1. Recency of qualification
Valid for Diploma completed within 10 years of application to UC.

2. International student requirements
International applicants must also meet the Genuine Student (GS) criteria as required by the Department of Home Affairs.

Bachelor of Business

Graduates who have successfully completed a Diploma of Accounting (FNS50222) at CIT are guaranteed a place in the Bachelor of Business (MGB109) course at UC and will get a varying amount of credit subject to the below conditions.

Graduates who have successfully completed earlier training packages within the past 10 years such as Diploma of Accounting (FNS50217) are guaranteed a place in the Bachelor of Business (MGB109). However the Faculty will assess your completed qualifications to determine your eligibility for credit.

1. Specialist Major in Accounting & Finance
a) Students who choose to do the Specialist Major in Accounting & Finance will be eligible to receive 15 credit points (5 units of credit).
b) Students undertaking the Specialist Major in Accounting & Finance will require 5 semesters to complete the course due to pre-requisites and unit offerings.

2. Other specialist majors
Students who wish to do any of the below specialist majors will be eligible to receive 24 credit points (1 year of credit).

  • SM0017 Business Economics*
  • SM0016 Accounting (33 and 39 credit point options)
  • SM0022 Human Resource Management
  • SM0023 International Business
  • SM0024 Management
  • SM0025 Marketing
  • SM0095 Government
*Students commencing in Semester 2 who wish to complete Specialist Major in Business Economics (SM0017) will require an additional semester of study part time to complete this major (2.5 years total).

FAQs

Students with an equivalent diploma from another institution are generally eligible for the same credit and admission (subject to assessment), however, CIT applicants will be prioritised for admission.

If you have completed a different diploma, you will still be eligible for admission to most UC courses and there are a range of existing credit arrangements available.

The CIT to UC guaranteed pathways will be available for 3 years from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028.

If your eligible Diploma was awarded within 10 years of applying to UC, you can receive guaranteed entry and credit for the Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Government or Bachelor of Graphic Design.

If your eligible Diploma was awarded within 5 years of applying to UC, you can receive guaranteed entry and credit for the Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Early Childhood and Primary Education or Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Birth to Five).

If you meet the above criteria and apply to UC by 31 December 2028, you will be eligible for the program as outlined in the details above.
