English language program

Study UC English Language Programs (CRICOS Code: 059330F) at the University of Canberra

The 10-week English Language Program, taught by the University of Canberra College (UC College), at ANU Acton Campus; and 10-week English Language Program, taught by the University of Canberra College (UC College), at University of Canberra Campus are available to ANU applicants to help strengthen their English language skills and meet ANU minimum English language requirement

Eligibility requirements

The English Language Program is available to applicants who satisfy the following criteria:

  • You will be at least 18 years old at the time of commencing the English Language Program.
  • You intend to commence at ANU in Semester 1, 2026.
  • You have received an ANU conditional offer on satisfying the University’s English language requirement. Any other conditions must be satisfied before applying for an offer to the English Language Program.
  • You have achieved one of the following results in an international English test:

Accepted tests and minimum scores

10-week English program requirements
  • IELTS (Academic), Oneskill Retake: An overall score of at least 6.0 with no band less than 5.5
  • TOEFL (internet-based test): An overall score of at least 60 with the following minimum scores:
    • writing 18
    • speaking 16
    • reading 8
    • listening 7
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): An overall score of at least 50 with no communicative skill below 42
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced: An overall score of at least 169 with no band less than 162
20-week English program requirements
  • IELTS (Academic), Oneskill Retake: An overall score of at least 5.5 with no band less than 5.5,
  • TOEFL (internet-based test): An overall score of at least 48 with the following minimum scores:
    • writing 18
    • speaking 16
    • reading 8
    • listening 7
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): An overall score of at least 42 with no communicative skill below 42
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced: An overall score of at least 162 with no band less than 162

How to apply

Step 1: Apply to UC English Language Program by the applicable date below. You must upload your conditional ANU offer and your latest English test results during the application process.

  • 10-week program: Deadline to apply to UC, 7 September 2025
  • 20-week program: Deadline to apply to UC, 23 June 2025

Step 2: Follow the instructions in your offer letters to accept your offer to the English Language Program offer. Offers must be accepted, and full amount stated on the offer letter must be paid fully by the applicable date below, unless places are filled in the program earlier.

  • 10-week program: Accept both offers by 22 September 2025
  • 20-week program: Accept both offers by 7 July 2025

Step 3: After accepting your offer, you will receive two Confirmation of Enrolments (COEs) from ANU covering the entire duration of your studies. These COEs will enable you to apply for a student visa that covers both the UC English Language Program and your ANU program.

Step 4: Lodge a valid student visa application (along with other documents outlined on the Department’s website. See: subclass 500 student visa) 

Step 5: You will receive an email containing information regarding the ELICOS Orientation & Enrolment from the University of Canberra College a few weeks before the ELICOS commencement date. You will need to ensure you arrive and are settled in Australia prior to the orientation date listed in your offer letter.

Step 1: Apply to UC English Language Program on or before 7 September 2025. Eligible applicants will receive an offer from the University of Canberra with a 10-week or 20-week English Language Program.

  • 10-week program: Deadline to apply to UC, 7 September 2025
  • 20-week program: Deadline to apply to UC, 23 June 2025

Step 2: Via StudyLink, Follow the instructions in student’s offer letters to accept the offer to the English Language Program offer. Offers must be accepted, and full amount stated on the offer letter must be paid fully by the applicable date below unless places are filled in the program earlier.

  • 10-week program: Accept both offers by 22 September 2025
  • 20-week program: Accept both offers by 7 July 2025

Step 1: Complete the application form and send it back to ucc.admissions@canberra.edu.au along with the following information on or before 23 June 2025 (20-week program) or 7 September 2025 (10-week program). 

  • the student’s current residential address, email address and phone number in the application form to allow us to process the application.
  • evidence of the student’s Academic record , English proficiency & passport for further assessment

Eligible applicants will receive an offer from the University of Canberra with a 10-week or 20-week English Language Program.

UC English Language Program runs for 10 teaching weeks (10 November 2025 - 6 February 2026) and 20 teaching weeks (11 August 2025 - 6 February 2026)

The UC English Language Program costs $520.00AUD per week. (*2025 fees)

  • 10-WEEK UC English Language Program: $5,200AUD
  • 20-week UC English Language Program: $10,400AUD

Teaching location

10-week UC English Language Program is taught at the ANU, ANU Acton Campus.

20-week UC English Language Program is taught at the UC, University of Canberra Campus.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Class size limited to 18 students for enhanced student engagement.

20 hours per week.

If a student requires additional support and is placed on a performance plan after 5 weeks, they may be required to attend speaking club and study skills sessions. Additionally, they will receive an extra hour per week of guided study time outside the classroom, which is counted as additional support.

$520 per week (2025 fees)

Classes consist of two 2-hour lessons per day, separated by a 1-hour lunch break. Each lesson includes a 5-minute break after the first hour.

A student handbook will include the information on all assessments for each level.

No. Classes will be conducted in-person to enhance teaching quality and enrich the learning experience.

Yes.

  • 10-week program: Around week 5 and in week 10.
  • 20-week program: Around week 5, week 10, week 15 and in week 20.

A minimum score of 50% is required in all assessments and overall. For more details, please refer to the student handbook provided at the beginning of the course.

You must fulfill all conditions specified in the Australian National University’s conditional offer. For advice regarding your ANU offer, contact admissions@anu.edu.au.

You must meet the academic requirements for your chosen ANU course, with English language competency subject to further assessment:

  • 10-week program: Minimum IELTS score of 6.0 overall, with no band lower than 5.5.
  • 20-week program: Minimum IELTS score of 5.5 overall, with no band lower than 5.5.

The ELICOS course is accredited and well-developed, with an intervention process and support services in place to assist students in enhancing their academic performance.

You can choose to stay on UC’s on campus accommodation, ANU’s accommodation or source your own accommodation.
