Citizen Centred Justice Clinic

Do you have a problem with your employment, discrimination, with workplace bullying and harassment, with housing immigration, family or custody matters, with violence or sexual assault, with Centrelink or any other matters that are causing you concern? If so come and have a chat with a lawyer at our free Citizen Centred Justice Law Clinic (CCJ). Even if we can't help you directly we will be able to warm refer you to someone else who will.

CCJ is a by-appointment free legal advice clinic on Wednesdays at the University of Canberra.

UC's pro bono Citizen Centred Justice Legal Clinic is open on Wednesdays. This is a specialist and free legal service for UC students and members of the local Canberra community.

The Clinic is open for legal advice and assistance services on a Wednesday, in Building 1, Level B, at the UC Medical & Counselling Centre, University of Canberra. You can book a face-to-face or telephone appointment.

The Clinic is run by lawyers supported by students who are gaining legal practice experience towards their legal qualification. The service is a confidential legal service.

You can book an appointment with the Citizen Centred Justice Clinic through the University's Medical & Counselling Centre: 02 6201 2351. When booking, let our receptionists know if you prefer a face-to-face or telephone appointment. Bookings need to be made by telephone, not by direct email to the Clinic, and when you arrive, you need to check-in at the Medical & Counselling Centre.

Our Practice Focus
Our lawyers are able to assess the situation and provide guidance and practical problem - solving approaches. In some situations we may be able to provide advocacy and representational services. Part of our service is providing practical hands-on training to tomorrows lawyers in a safe and supportive environment while also providing an excellent and confidential legal advice service provided by experienced, practising lawyers and academics skilled in advocacy, negotiation and mediation.

Sometimes your health and wellbeing may be adversely affected by legal issues you don't even know exist - talking to a lawyer can help.

Internships

The Clinic offers unpaid internships to UC students with a preference being given to students in the penultimate or final year of an LLB. Students must enrol in a BGL Internship unit to have their experience count toward their degree.

Interns are typically involved, under supervision, as a member of the team, in legal practice experience activities such as client interviews, drafting file notes, case management, client liaison, practice management, and drafting legal letters of advice and applications. They may have the opportunity to represent clients in tribunals and attend court for observation as directed for educational purposes. They may also attend networking events and educational seminars conducted by different practitioners at the Clinic or off-site.

Interns attend the Clinic on campus. Opportunities to work remotely may be provided on a case-by-case basis, though not on a permanent basis. This is because being physically part of the team is important for building relationships and networking with other students and legal and health practitioners.

Applications must be made prior to the commencement of each semester.

Applications should include a resume and cover letter and can be made directly to CCJ (ccj@canberra.edu.au).
