You’ll learn how different political systems shape the world we live in. If you’ve thought about working as a public servant in the Australian Public Service (APS), running for parliament, making the world better through policy and change – this course is an excellent pathway.

This government degree is designed for people who want to explore how governments work and how policies are created to solve complex problems. It is a general degree with the option to specialise in areas such as politics and international relations, applied economics or public policy and administration, giving you flexibility to specialise your learning.

UC's Bachelor of Government can be studied in a blended or on campus delivery mode.

While you can't study fully online, flexibility is built into our government courses to ensure you can fit learning around your lifestyle. Our blended study mode offers face-to-face interaction with online learning components, ensuring you can work, volunteer or take on placement commitments as you study. Whether you are pursuing an Applied Economics degree, a Public Policy degree or want to major in International Relations,  you’ll have the perfect balance of practical engagement on campus with accessible online resources, lectures and study material.

In Australia, public servants work in government departments and agencies, helping to write policies, deliver services and support communities. To become a public servant in the Australian Public Service (APS), most people complete a university degree that builds strong skills in problem solving, communication and analysis.

UC’s Bachelor of Government provides a strong foundation if you want to get a job in the APS. Through subjects in politics, law, economics and public policy, plus opportunities to focus on areas such as international relations or administration, you’ll build your general knowledge and confidence. By studying politics and policy alongside economics and administration, you’ll have the insight to understand how decisions are made and the communication skills to influence them. Whether your goal is to work within government or to one day represent your community as an elected leader, our unique Bachelor of Government gives you the tools and flexibility to pursue both paths.

Still deciding which political science major is right for you? We can help you decide on a specialisation that guides your studies is what interests you most.

Politics and International Relations: If you are curious about global affairs, diplomacy or security, this major lets you study politics and international relations in depth. Careers can lead to roles like policy advisor, diplomat or political analyst.

Applied Economics: If you like numbers, problem solving and understanding what drives decisions, this major is similar to an economics degree with a practical focus. Careers may include economist, data analyst or financial policy officer.

Public Policy and Administration: If you want to know how government really works and enjoy leadership or community impact, this major connects closely to a public policy degree or public administration degree. Careers could include public servant, community program manager or public sector consultant.
