About the course

What is a sign and what do they do?

How do signs change the way we perceive a space?

What is the most powerful sign you can remember, and why?

Determine a place/thing/situation within the UC campus where you feel a sign could help. Design a (temporary) sign, or signs. The sign must be designed for use somewhere on campus, so consider your target audience, who will use/see your sign(s). Fabricate your sign and document it in use.

Experience a real Visual Communication Design practice which will involve the following steps:

  • understanding and analysing a project brief,
  • inspecting the area where the project will be implemented,
  • identifying problems,
  • understanding the target audience,
  • ideation research,
  • prototyping possible design solutions,
  • receiving and implementing feedback,
  • refining the final solution,
  • implement your project to its actual space on UC campus.

You will:

  • Create a physical sign to be displayed on UC Campus.
  • Develop a sense for designing and communicating in three-dimensional space.
  • Learn about engaging your audience.
  • Create out in the public realm, learning to push beyond your comfort level, and have a good time doing it.
