UC Capitals sign Steph Bairstow

1 July 2016: The University of Canberra Capitals have added more young talent to the team for the 2016/2017 WNBL season signing Steph Bairstow on a two-year deal.

For the 21-year-old who played college basketball for Utah State University from 2012-2014, basketball is a family affair with older brother Cameron playing for the Chicago Bulls in the NBA before being traded to the Detroit Pistons this month.

The 188cm guard/forward was on the roster for the former WNBL team the SEQ Stars, but was unable to take to the court due to injury. She played for Bendigo in last year's SEABL competition before joining the Brisbane Lady Spartans where she is averaging 17 points and seven rebounds a game.

Bairstow is a former scholarship holder at the Australian Institute of Sport and played with the team in the 2011/2012 WNBL season. She also helped Australia to a bronze medal in the 2012 FIBA U18 3X3 World Championships.

Bairstow said she was looking forward to joining the University of Canberra Capitals.

"The team looks really exciting. It's a great young group of girls and I can't wait to join them on the court this season," she said.

"I'm keen to cement my position in the league and take my game to the next level, and I believe that Gorris will help me do that."

University of Canberra Capitals head coach Paul Goriss said Bairstow was a great addition to the team.

"At 6'2, Steph brings a versatile skill set to the UC Capitals roster. She is very efficient and can score in a variety of ways. She fits the style that we want to play and is a young star on the rise," Goriss said.
