Jazmon joins the UC Capitals

11 August 2016: The University of Canberra Capitals have signed San Antonio Stars guard Jazmon Gwathmey for the 2016/2017 WNBL season.

The 23-year-old graduated from James Madison University (JMU) this year, where she finished her college basketball career ranked eighth on JMU's all-time scoring list with 1,555 points. She played 136 games for JMU — the fourth highest in JMU history and made 104 career 3-pointers.

Gwathmey was drafted to the WNBA team Minnesota Lynx in April before being traded to the San Antonio Stars for the current season.

Gwathmey said she is looking forward to beginning her overseas playing career in Australia with the University of Canberra Capitals.

"I'm really excited to join the UC Capitals and play my first season in the WNBL. I've never been outside the US so I'm looking forward to experiencing Australian culture, sightseeing and seeing some kangaroos!" she said.

"I know that the pace will be the same as the WNBA so I'm expecting some tough competition come preseason," she said. "I'm vocal, run the floor well and I'm a quick learner. I can't wait to start this new adventure with the UC Caps."

University of Canberra Capitals head coach Paul Goriss said Gwathmey brings an athletic value to the team.

"We are very fortunate to have a player of Jazmon's caliber joining the UC Capitals this season. She prides herself on defense and rebounding, is competitive and is keen to help the team any way she can. I am excited to welcome Jaz to the UC Capitals family."
