Nursing Practice 2 PG (11658.1)

Nursing Practice 2 (NP2) is the second clinically focussed unit and builds on the foundations established in Nursing Practice 1 (NP1). The unit incorporates assessment that prepares students for professional registration as well as enhancing student understanding of the registered nurse as a professional, legal accountability, reflection in practice, clinical reasoning and teamwork. This unit has a focus on therapeutic medication administration; neurological, cardiovascular, abdominal and metabolic systems and the physiological differences in paediatric and advanced age populations. It will integrate anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology of acute and chronic conditions and pharmacology to further develop the students understanding of nursing practice.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate the safe administration of nonparental medications (subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous), inclusive of the clinical rationale and evidence base of practice;
2. Defends the rationale for use of guidelines at a micro, meso and macro level and demonstrate an understanding of nursing practice and professional responsibilities which promote safety in healthcare environments;
3. Formulate holistic nursing assessments to identify health deterioration and inform clinical reasoning for people across the lifespan;
4. Discuss the importance of communication and partnerships in healthcare in relation to the National Safety and Quality Health Standards.Successfully complete a four (4) week clinical placement by demonstrating clinical competence to the standard outlined in the Clinical Assessment Tool;
5. Evaluate self-practice and interpersonal relationships and teamwork utilising an appropriate reflective model/framework; and
6. Demonstrate expected level of understanding and clinical performance commensurate with the scope of practice for Nursing Practice 2.
