Biomedical vs Medical Science degrees: which one is right for you?
By Laura Tough
Are you trying to decide between a biomedical specialisation or a medical science degree, but not sure which is right for you? . We are here to break down the key differences between what you study and the career options of each to help you decide which degree best aligns with your interests and career goals.
What is Biomedical Science?
Biomedical Science focuses on understanding disease, health and the human body at a cellular and molecular level. It’s a research driven field and often appeals to students who love lab work, problem solving and scientific investigation.
At UC, Biomedical Science will introduce you to the structures and functions of the human body, and how these structures meet your physiological needs in diverse circumstances. You will learn about cellular and molecular principles underlying human function, to help you understand the major body systems and how they coordinate to maintain human health.
Essentially, it’s about understanding how the human body works down to the molecular level.
Is Biomedical Science the right choice for me?
If you’re choosing biomedical science, you love hands-on lab work and want to understand how science is used to explore disease, health and the human body. Job wise, biomedical science can lead to roles such as medical, research or laboratory scientists, as well as jobs in biotech or pharmaceuticals. It can also open doors to pathology labs or pathways to medicine, dentistry and allied health with additional study.
What is Medical Science?
Medical Science, on the other hand, is generally more aligned with human health, disease and healthcare systems. While still science-based, it often has a stronger emphasis on applied learning and preparing you for patient-centred or clinical pathways.
UC’s Medical Science focuses on the foundations of the science behind medicine, human health and disease. You will begin with basic physical, chemical foundations of life followed by more advanced understanding of human function at the molecular, cellular, organ and whole-organism level from a series of perspective, such as genetics, biochemistry, neurobiology, pathobiology, and microbiology.
In simple terms, it teaches you the science behind how the human body works, what keeps it healthy and what causes disease.
Is Medical Science the right choice for me?
If you’re choosing medical science, you are likely interested in how science connects to human health and patient care. You want to understand how the body functions, what causes disease and how this knowledge is applied in healthcare settings. Career-wise, medical science can lead to roles in healthcare, clinical research or the medical industry. It is also a popular pathway into medicine and other health professions with further study.
Whether you’re drawn to the lab-based discovery of biomedical science or the applied, health-focused pathway of medical science, the right choice comes down to where you see your future.
