About the course

Do you have an interest in the arts, heritage, and culture? Are you fascinated by what goes on behind the scenes in museums and galleries?

Careers in museums and heritage are varied and involve roles in conservation, collections management, curation, heritage consulting and more. This short course aims to provide you with an understanding of the culture and heritage sector, and knowledge of the basic skills and qualifications required to pursue a career in the area. Through informal workshops, site visits to culturally significant places on the UC Bruce Campus, hands on experience with object conservation in the Heritage Lab, and the development of a small exhibition display on campus, you will get a taste of what a career in the GLAM sector is all about.

Dr Alison Wain

Associate Professor in Cultural and Creative Futures and Discipline Lead for Culture and Heritage

Alison trained as an archaeological conservator in Wales (UK) and worked on the development of the Scienceworks campus of Museum Victoria in Melbourne, discovering a passion for large technology heritage in the process. After 7 years Alison moved to Canberra to head up the Large Technology Workshop and Small Objects laboratory at the Australian War Memorial, and then decided to do a PhD exploring the ways in which people value, use and care for large technology heritage. Alison's research is focused on the challenges of preserving and interpreting engineering, industrial and science heritage, and the importance of recognising the intangible heritage connected with and embodied in machinery heritage.
