The 25th anniversary of the Australian National Museum of Education has indeed been a year of special events and of successful collaborations.
Although we eased slowly into 2022 as new waves of COVID challenged many of us and led to ongoing restrictions on event protocols, we were pleased that our contributions to the Faculty of Education’s 50th anniversary celebrations were well attended and very much appreciated.
The first, a book launch of School Days, was a collaboration with the Fellowship of Australian Writers and the second, a curated display on the theme “Five Decades of Teacher Education”, was held at UC’s Mura Gadi Gallery as a contribution to the 2022 Canberra and Region Heritage Festival.
The major event for our 25th anniversary was the ANME Annual Lecture presented by the Honourable Michael Kirby on May 16th. This wonderfully crafted lecture, Gaps in the Tapestry: indigenes, human rights and dangerous times, highlighted the reflective thinking of a leading Australian, who proudly acknowledges his government schooling as the foundation of his commitment to diversity and equity. This event was a collaboration with the National Museum of Australia.
Our final collaborative event for the year was a specially designed tour of the ANME for the Member for Canberra, Alicia Payne MP and members of the Australian Museums and Galleries Association (ACT Branch), one of whom called the ANME “a hidden gem of Canberra”.
Along with our important work-integrated learning projects with UC students that have continued across the year, these events would not have been possible without the contributions of our volunteers and Board members. Special thanks go to our Director, Dr Malcom Beazley AM, who led the important collaborative work. I also acknowledge the continuing support of the Faculty of Arts and Design and the Faculty of Education.
