The ANME is most grateful to the daughters of Dr Alan Barcan for their most generous donation of the extensive professional archive of their father, the late Dr Alan Barcan.
Renowned as one of Australia’s foremost scholars in the field of the History of Australian Education, Alan, M.A, M.Ed., PhD, was an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Newcastle for many years. He was well known for his two celebrated publications, A Short History of Education in New South Wales, first published in 1965, and later, Two Centuries of Education in New South Wales, published in 1988.
In November, on the occasion of her visit to the ANME, Ms Glenda Couch-Keen, Project Coordinator of the Friedensberg Historic German School Museum at Springton, South Australia, donated to the ANME two large pull-up posters, size 2m x 3m, depicting Australian Historical events during the period 1913-1918.
In addition to these informative posters, Ms Couch-Keen also donated a number of reference books, including School Days at Friendensberg, published in 1986 and Handiwork for School, (1944).

These large colourful posters were produced with the assistance of the History South Australia Community Museums Program Grant. The posters provide an introduction to the Museum and the history of the old Friedensberg School, in the context of South Australian history during this period, together with the local community of Springton at that time.
The posters make a significant contribution to ANME’s collection of large pictorial material, which is most useful for curators when preparing displays and exhibitions for special occasions.
Dr Malcolm Beazley AM, Director of ANME, expressed his gratitude to Ms Couch-Keen for travelling from South Australia to Canberra to deliver these donations personally.
