In addition to finding out about the extensive range of courses available to study at the University of Canberra, and enjoying the many activities and demonstrations planned, visitors were also invited to help create a major artwork using more than 10,000 brightly coloured chess pieces by alumna and Melbourne artist George Rose.

Thousands of pieces were distributed to schools across the ACT and surrounding region in the lead up to Open Day with students invited to return them to campus to become part of the artwork.

Visitors could also write their name or a special message on a chess piece for Ms Rose, who graduated with a Bachelor of Graphic Design in 2009, to use in the installation.

"It was a really positive day, we had a constant stream of people engaging with the work, writing messages, taking photos and asking questions," Ms Rose said.

"The words on the pieces added an extra dimension to the work as it came together. I'm really grateful to UC for this opportunity and also to my incredible 'build-team' who went above and beyond to help me create the piece."

The artwork, which revealed the words 'We were here', is currently located above the Refectory in Building  One.
