7 July 2014: The University of Canberra Capitals have signed Australian Opal guard Hanna Zavecz for the upcoming 2014/15 WNBL season.

The 181 cm player, with extensive experience in national and international basketball joins the University of Canberra Capitals on a one-year deal.

Zavecz said she's happy to return to Canberra, where she played for the Australian Institute of Sport WNBL team in 2002/2003.

"I am really excited to join the University of Canberra Capitals and work with great coaches and players but also to have the opportunity to study at the University of Canberra and finish my nutrition degree," the 28-year-old said.

Coach Carrie Graf said: "Hannah Zavecz is an incredibly experienced and dynamic player. She's a fantastic rebounder and a great defender, with the ability to score in numerous ways. Her signing brings another person of great character to the team."

Zavecz had a successful college career in the US where she starred with the University of Wyoming, gaining honourable selection with the All American team in 2008. She was first selected to the Australian Opals Team in 2010, after an outstanding season with the WNBL Bulleen Boomers.

The following year she had a starring role in helping the Boomers win their first WNBL title. She also gained valuable experience while playing with the Hungarian team Sopron in 2010/2011 before returning to the WNBL's Logan Thunder for the 2013/2014 season.

Zavecz has also been named in the Australian Opals extended squad for the 2014 FIBA World Championships in Turkey later this year.

The University of Canberra Capitals were established on May 16, taking over Canberra's former WNBL team. The Canberra WNBL franchise will be based in the University's soon-to-be-opened Sporting Commons building.
