This unit examines how students could develop and launch their own business and then how to manage and established small business for expansion. The unit begins by reviewing the history of small business and identifying a successful entrepreneur's characteristics. The unit will then coach students in some basic business skills including writing a business plan, launching a new venture, identifying market opportunities, creating a marketing plan, and financing a business.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Analyse the entrepreneurial process through which business ideas are evaluated;

2. Identify the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs;
3. Identify and describe strategies for supporting entrepreneurship;
4. Distinguish between business ideas and opportunities;
5. Explain how to write a formalised business plan and perform this task;
6. Explain how to write a marketing plan, and perform this task;
7. Explain how to finance business ventures; and
8. Identify and describe teambuilding dynamics.

All readings, texts and online references are provided through the Canvas site. This includes a number of online textbooks that can be downloaded and links to LinkedInLearning , Youtube and podcasts.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Learner engagement

This course is a 100% online self-paced programme with set assessment deliverable dates as per the Canvas site. There are no on-campus lectures or tutorials.  All lectures, videos, podcasts and reading resources are provided in the Canvas modules.

This unit is designed for independent online study. Students study the written and audio-visual materials individually at a time and location of their own choice with set individual assessment items submitted throughout the unit.

The assessment is split between a case study and a quiz that is developed progressively as you work through the learning materials, and the final report (Business Plan). The case study forms part of both the learning and the assessment of the unit and it is an important way of ensuring that the learning material is 'bedded down' in your mind.

This style of learning is designed specifically for students who are unable to attend campus-based classes due to other commitments. It may not be suitable for students who require a more interactive learning style and such students are encouraged to consider a campus-based unit instead.

This unit involves work-integrated learning: WIL Project. 

Students must adhere to University policy during WIL activities, including the Student Conduct Rules 2018, the WIL Policy and WIL Procedure, and the Assessment Policy and Assessment Procedure.

 

Additional information

The project is an activity that engages individuals or teams to respond to real-world problems or opportunities under the guidance of the faculty. No external placement or fieldwork is required.

The project is in two parts and is detailed on the canvas site. The first part is the progression through a case study of a restaurant that is undergoing a series of changes. Students are involved in various stages of management practices and decision-making.

The second part is the development of a Business Plan for a hypothetical Company.
