Learning outcomes
After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:1. Apply relevant knowledge and skills across a range of health care environments to build towards autonomy for safe and effective practice in exercise physiology services;
2. Apply respectful professional practice that aligns with the requirements of the University Student Code of Conduct and the specific placement environment, and abides by the ESSA Code of Professional Conduct and Ethical Practice and other governing legislation and policies that apply;
3. Assemble professional evidence of core competencies and placement activities, in line with the ESSA Accredited Exercise Physiologist Professional Standards;
4. Develop an identity as a contemporary allied health professional through reflective practice, and building skills in advocacy and innovative approaches to healthcare practice; and

There are some required readings to support the workshops and learning activities. These will be specified clearly on Canvas.
This is the first of two focused Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) 'Placement' units that cover the clinical placement requirements of the course. As part of placement preparation and engagement, there are required documents that need to be read, including the 2024 EP Clinical Placement Handbook, along with other university and organisational processes. These will be covered within the workshops of this unit, and provided on Canvas over the course of the semester in preparation for block placements in winter.
Submission of assessment items
Extensions & Late submissions
All placement documentation must be submitted to Smartabase, as this is the central platform for collating professional evidence of placement performance and requirements for accreditation.
Special assessment requirements
Students who are allocated to a placement in Block 1, during the winter block placements, will be given a withheld grade for this unit (WHW). This is only due to their placement being scheduled after the semester dates, and the associated placement performance and documentation form part of the Professional Evidence assessment in this unit. Their grade will be updated and finalised once the placement is completed and all documentation is submitted and finalised.
Academic integrity

Use of Text-Matching Software
The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.
Learner engagement
There are only three (3) on campus workshops for this unit, along with three self-directed online learning modules. Students are expected to attend all three on-campus workshops. Online access will be provided to students if they are sick/symptomatic in any way.
Inclusion and engagement
Reasonable adjustment plans can be developed to support student learning on placements. Please read the earlier information under Academic Content 'Essential Information for Placements', and also refer to the Faculty of Health WIL Health and Impairment document on Canvas.
Participation requirements
Students must undertake a minimum of one (1) allocated placement experience as part of this unit.
Required IT skills
Students need to engage with Smartabase as the platform for recording their placement activities and collating their professional evidence of meeting placement requirements for accreditation.
In-unit costs
All costs associated with uniforms, travel/transport and/or accomodation for placement are the responsibility of the student.
Work placement, internships or practicums
This unit involves Placement. Students must adhere to University policy during WIL activities, including the Student Conduct Rules 2018, the WIL Policy and WIL Procedure, and the Assessment Policy and Assessment Procedure.
This unit has pre-placement requirements. You must complete Pre-Place: Preparation for Work Integrated Learning prior to commencement of your Placement. You can self-enrol in this module through the UC Learn site here.
