In this unit students practice person centred care, integrating prior knowledge and experiences from the clinical and simulated learning environments. Students will actively participate in person centred care activities and clinical tasks to further develop their problem solving, prioritising, clinical reasoning and nursing practice including holistic health assessment, care planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care.
This unit has a focus on the development of technical and non-technical nursing capabilities, high acuity nursing care across life stages (including pregnancy), healthcare technologies and interprofessional teamwork. Informed by thorough health assessment and integration of multiple knowledges and perspectives, students will identify actual and potential health needs in situations when goals of care may evolve. Students will engage safely in the provision of person-centred care in simulated and supervised clinical settings across different care contexts.
1. Model safety in the simulated environment including documentation, clinical handover, risk assessment and prevention, time management, problem solving, teamwork and advocacy for people and families;
2. Perform primary and secondary health survey on children and adults (including during pregnancy) in the simulated environment, analyse findings to identify health status and deterioration, determine care priorities and nursing actions and inform care escalation;
3. Administer blood products and medicines safely and demonstrate the principles of quality use of medicines in the simulated environment;
4. Actively participate in person centred nursing activities safely under supervision using evidence to identify health needs and inform clinical decision making and nursing care for positive patient outcomes;
5. Reflect on cultural safety, inclusive approaches, ethics and situational awareness to partner effectively with people their primary carers and families to make informed decisions when goals of care evolve;
6. Work with interprofessional team members to undertake nursing roles in a medical emergency situation, reflect on how these nursing roles may differ across clinical contexts; and
7. Demonstrate expected level of understanding and performance in simulated and professional environments commensurate with the scope of practice for Integrating Nursing Concepts 5 and, reflect on clinical feedback and theory knowledge gaps to set learning goals ahead of the final consolidating nursing practice unit.
