This unit will explore workforce management within health in the context of health leadership. It will provide students with insight into policy, procedures and legal frameworks. Recruitment and retention strategies are a focus within this unit, and workplace culture will be analysed. Additionally, communication strategies around policy, performance issues and difficult conversations will be explored. An important aspect of this unit is the intensive face to face workshop which will bring together the elements of the unit and provide opportunities for practical skills application.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Critically evaluate workforce management policy based on an understanding of global and local health workforce legal framework;
2. Identify and discuss factors including policies, procedures, work environment, and team characteristics which contribute to recruitment, retention and workplace culture within a health setting; and
3. Engage in crucial and difficult workforce management conversations as a manager and/or leader.

Artificial Intelligence

Students are not permitted to use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in assessments for this unit, except for Studiosity Writing Feedback Plus.

GenAI may only be used in authorised ways when completing assessments at UC. This means that GenAI can only be used for an assessment when:

  1. the Unit Convener has authorised GenAI use for that assessment
  2. the student uses GenAI in the way that the assessment instructions allow
  3. the student fully acknowledges their use of GenAI, with proper citations, references and a GenAI Acknowledgement Statement in line with the assessment instructions.

Where the assessment instructions do not specifically state that GenAI may be used and how, then its use is not permitted for that assessment. Students must still provide the required GenAI Acknowledgement Statement to indicate whether GenAI has or has not been used in the preparation of the assessment. If unsure, students should seek advice from the Unit Convener.

Special assessment requirements

To pass this unit, students must:

  • Attempt all assessment items; and
  • Achieve 50% overall.

Required IT skills

This unit involves online meetings. To participate you will need a microphone and camera. For best audio quality we recommend a microphone and speaker headset. Most current laptops enable these features easily.

Work placement, internships or practicums

This unit involves work-integrated learning including applying the content to your work leadership context (field work). Students must adhere to University policy during WIL activities, including the Student Conduct Rules 2018, the WIL Policy and WIL Procedure, and the Assessment Policy and Assessment Procedure.
