Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:1. Apply midwifery, medical, pharmacological and other theory to the provision of midwifery care for women and their babies;
2. Demonstrate competence in midwifery work in both community and hospital settings, across the continuum of care;
3. Demonstrate satisfactory achievement of the UC Bachelor of Midwifery 'minimum practice requirements'; and

Submission of assessment items
Extensions & Late submissions
Unlike other disciplines, the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) component of studying midwifery continues alongside the academic semester and this work can be complex, demanding and unpredictable. Therefore, students can use WIL as circumstances to apply for an extension to an assessment item's due date using the assignment extension form available from the Student Forms page and the Canvas site. Unit convenors can use their discretion to approve an extension of up to one week on these grounds and may check and audit Daisy documentation as evidence to support the extension.
All assessments are required to be submitted electronically. A coversheet should only be submitted only when an assessment cannot be submitted electronically (e.g. a photograph, a model, a practical assessment), see section 3.10 of the Assessment Policy.
Special assessment requirements
OSCE Assessments and all ePortfolio items are ungraded assessments which must be passed in order to pass the unit. All other assignments do not need to be passed if a final grade >50% is met.
Supplementary assessment
As per the UC Assessment Procedures, should supplementary assessment be required, an assessment task will be offered which is significantly different from the original task but comparable in terms of the learning outcomes being assessed. This may be in the form of an examination, written task, oral examination or scenario response.
Academic integrity
Students have a responsibility to uphold University standards on ethical scholarship. Good scholarship involves building on the work of others and use of others' work must be acknowledged with proper attribution made. Cheating, plagiarism, and falsification of data are dishonest practices that contravene academic values. Refer to the University's Student Charter for more information.
To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. You can access this module within UCLearn (Canvas) through the 'Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism' link in the Study Help site.
Use of Text-Matching Software
The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.
Participation requirements
Attendance at classes is compulsory in this course, as per the Bachelor of Midwifery curriculum approved by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council. Because we understand that students have multi-rolled lives, 3 seminar absences in the period from the beginning of planned classes until the end of the semester, will be accepted. However, these absences are tolerated based on the expectation that students will seek out information on content and processes which they have missed. If students regularly miss timetabled seminars a 200 word synopsis about their learning on the topic/s of any missed sessions may be required to be submitted.
Required IT skills
This unit may involve online meetings in real time using the Virtual Room in your UCLearn teaching site. The Virtual Room allows you to communicate in real time with your lecturer and other students. To participate verbally, rather than just typing, you will need a microphone. For best audio quality we recommend a microphone and speaker headset. For more information and to test your computer, go to the Virtual Room in your UCLearn site and 'Join Course Room'. This will trigger a tutorial to help familiarise you with the functionality of the virtual room.
Work placement, internships or practicums
This unit involves work integrated learning: Placement or Internship/Simulation. Students must adhere to University policy during WIL activities, including the Student Conduct Rules 2018, the WIL Policy and WIL Procedure, and the Assessment Policy and Assessment Procedure.
This unit has pre-placement requirements (e.g. Working with Vulnerable People registration, immunisation/s). You must complete Pre-Place: Preparation for Work Integrated Learning prior to commencement of your Placement. You can self-enrol in this module through the UC Learn site here.

Additional information
As you know, midwifery is a complex course because of both the theory and practice requirements, so please do not remain quiet if you are concerned or worried. The Unit Convener, your midwifery mentor, Midwifery Practice Coordinators, and the Course Convenor are all here to help you. At UC, as well as the excellent midwives in the practice areas, you have the added advantage of access to our Practice Support Midwives who are available to assist you in your practice with women. We want you to continue on your journey to becoming useful and connected midwives by learning in a supportive environment, so please let us know if you feel very challenged. Most things can be sorted out quickly and easily if we know. We will also help with more complex issues.
You will need to self-regulate time off from being on call this year. It is important to turn your phone "off" at times to unwind and have balance in your life. This will need to be done on an individual basis and will be determined by when you have women due, if you are on task with requirements. Your unit convenor, practice co-ordinators and PSMs can help you with discussions around this.
