Toward understanding business practice, students are required to undertake 'real world' experiences. Students are required to undertake an internship of 75 hours under the supervision of a professional practitioner in an appropriate workplace in the community where they will be exposed to and involved in the processes of planning and implementing management activities. Students are required to analyse the organisation and management practices by preparing research reports and keeping a reflective journal. They will also prepare and present a 30 minute seminar presentation to share their observations and experiences with other students at the semesters end.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

Prerequisites

Successful completion of 24 credit points in a course in the Faculty of Business, Government & Law. Achieved a Grade Point Average of 4.5 or higher.

Required texts

No specific textbooks are required for this unit. However, students are expected to engage in extensive research across various journals, newspapers, online resources, and relevant career texts to support their assessments and enhance their preparation for the professional world. It is important to revisit and incorporate relevant theories that have been learned throughout your degree or researched in scholarly journals into your major research report.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

All assessment items are to be submitted to the Assignment Drop boxes in CANVAS. It is important to plan and prepare these items during your internship.

For approved late submissions due to the late start or finish of your internship:

  • Research Report Part A: Submit within 3 weeks after the commencement of your placement.
  • All other required assessments: Submit within 3 weeks after the completion of your placement.

In the event that the Canvas site is no longer accessible after the conclusion of the semester, please ensure to save the specific details regarding each assessment item, including Workshop 2 PowerPoint slides, assignment guidelines, and marking rubrics. These resources will be useful for reference. In such cases, please email the assessment directly to the unit convener.

 

Academic integrity

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Participation requirements

75 hours of work placement together with the submission of all assessment items. Participation in all learning activities both in the field and off campus (including workshops) is highly recommended for the successful completion of this unit.

Required IT skills

You are assumed to have adequate skills in the use of word processing and spread sheet programs, Internet browsers and search engines. If you feel you do not have adequate skills, please discuss the matter with the unit convener.

In-unit costs

No additional costs beyond your travel, accommodation expenses, a police check  (if required - currently approximately cost approximately $29) together with your normal unit enrolment fee are anticipated. If you are working with children you may also require a current working with children approval certificate (currently these are free for unpaid internship positions). If you require this certificate and/or a Police Check then steps involved on how to obtain these certificates can be found at www.canberra.edu.au/placement

Work placement, internships or practicums

This unit involves a 75 hour work placement completed either virtually or at your designated venue. Therefore, additional student responsibilities are required in addition to those described in this section. Work-place learning requires strict adherence to professional practice principles and ethics. Client/patient confidentiality must always be maintained, including for assessment items such as reports or essays. Should you experience any unprofessional behaviour during your internship please let your unit convener know as soon as possible. The professional nature of this unit also requires 100% participation at all learning activities (virtual workshops, practicals etc. if scheduled – see section 3) for the successful completion of this unit (also see section 6c). If such requirements cannot be satisfied (e.g. timetable clash), it is recommended that you meet with your Course Convener to schedule this unit for a future semester.
