This is a clinical placement unit that consolidates and advances the application of theory to clinical practice. Students develop entry level clinical skills.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Undertake a variety of assessments for clients with complex communication needs to determine the need for speech pathology services;
2. Make clinical decisions based on critical appraisal of evidence and make modifications based on contextual, ethical and cultural considerations;
3. Develop holistic and client-centred management and treatment plans for a range of clients with complex communication and swallowing disorders with minimal support;
4. Use a variety of oral and written communication strategies considering health literacy;
5. Critically evaluate and synthesise research to inform clinical practice; and
6. Understand the principles of interdisciplinary practice.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

Moderation: Assessments will be moderated in accordance with the Faculty of Health Moderation Guidelines.  A copy of the guidelines will be made available on the CANVAS site.

Supplementary assessment

Supplementary assessments will be provided for this unit in line with the University of Canberra guidelines.  

If students fail a VIVA, they have one opportunity to take a supplementary VIVA in the same Range of Practice Area but with a different case. If the student fails the second attempt, the student must repeat the unit.   

If a student does not make Entry-level in their final placement, they will have one opportunity to take a supplementary placement. If the student does not make Entry-level in their supplementary placement they must repeat the unit.

Academic integrity

Students have a responsibility to uphold University standards on ethical scholarship. Good scholarship involves building on the work of others and use of others' work must be acknowledged with proper attribution made. Cheating, plagiarism, and falsification of data are dishonest practices that contravene academic values. Refer to the University's Student Charter for more information.

To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. You can access this module within UCLearn (Canvas) through the 'Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism' link in the Study Help site.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Learner engagement

Whilst on placement, students will be expected to juggle coursework demands in addition to placement requirements simultaneously. Placements are full-time (4-days a week) unless otherwise arranged with the Clinical Placement Coordinator and Inclusion and Engagement. If you are experienceing difficulties whilst on your placement, please contact the Clinical Placement Coordinator and/or Unit Convener as soon as possible, and do not wait until the end of the placement.

Participation requirements

To pass this unit students are required to:

* Participate in all clinical placement activities

* Attend 80% of the online tutorials/workshop.

* Attend 100% of intensives in-person. 

* Attend all the VIVAs virtually.  

* Complete placement at entry-level competency.

* Pass all oral and written vivas at entry-level competency.

* Pass clinical portfolio at entry-level competency.

If a student does not attend all the VIVAs without a request for deferment, they will not be able to pass the unit.

Required IT skills

This unit involves online meetings in real time using UCLearn (Canvas). UCLearn provides a virtual classroom or meeting room where you can communicate in real time with your lecturer and other students. To participate verbally, rather than just typing, you will need a microphone. For best audio quality we recommend a microphone and speaker headset. Students who attend workshops through the virtual room are strongly encouraged to turn on both their video and audio to participate fully in the workshop activities.

In-unit costs

Students may be required to travel to/from placement or stay in the region of their placmeent, and student are expected to cover any associated travel or accomodation costs for placement.

Students are expected to cover travel costs associated with placement requirements (e.g. attending a home or school visit). Please contac the Clinical Placement Coordinator or Unit Convener if you are experiencing difficulties with this whilst on placement. 

Students are recommended not to book travel and accommodation that cannot be cancelled, as placements are subject to change at the last minute.

The placement office may be able to discuss accommodation support options with students.

Work placement, internships or practicums

This unit involves a clinical placement Students must adhere to University policy during WIL activities, including the Student Conduct Rules 2018, the WIL Policy and WIL Procedure, and the Assessment Policy and Assessment Procedure. Work-place learning requires strict adherence to professional practice principles and ethics. You must complete Pre-Place: Preparation for Work Integrated Learning prior to commencement of your Placement. You can self-enrol in this module through the UC Learn site here.

Client/patient confidentiality must always be maintained (see Clinical Education Handbook ), including for assessment items such as reports or essays. The professional nature of this unit also requires 100% participation at all learning activities (tutorial and placement days).  For the successful completion of this unit (also see section 6c) students must complete all the placement assessments. If attendance requirements cannot be satisfied (e.g. timetable clash), it is recommended that you meet with your Unit Convener to schedule this unit for a future semester.

Additional information

Clinical placements will run for 30 days, for four-days a week (Monday to Thursday) (unless a prior approval for a part-time placement is granted by Inclusion and Engagement and the Clinical Placement Coordinator).
