Global health has taken a new meaning and significance in the past two decades given increased globalization and emergence of new and shared health challenges. This unit addresses the most critical issues in global health and the interconnection between global and national health concerns and solutions. Students will learn about the impacts of globalization, demographic dynamics, and environmental change on global public health. They will be introduced to concepts and measures relevant to global public health and learn about the distribution of disease and mortality burden across the globe. The course also covers major global initiatives for disease prevention and health promotion as well as the key players in the global health system. The ultimate goal is to enable students develop skills in critical thinking in relation to global health issues.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an integrated understanding of key concepts, metrics, measurement techniques, and frameworks used in examining global health issues;
2. Critically analyse the distribution of health and disability around the world including emerging global health threats;
3. Present a coherent and sustained argument critiquing the impact of globalization, population dynamics and climate change on global public health and the linkages between global and local health issues;
4. Evaluate major global initiatives for disease prevention and health promotion and analyse the roles and agendas of major players in global health; and
5. Demonstrate a deep understanding of ethical and human rights concerns in global health.

In addition to the recommended text, weekly readings will be provided.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Learner engagement

The unit will be delivered as a hybrid model with recorded online lectures and face to face live tutorials. Online participation via the Canvas virtual room will be facilitated for students unable to attend the tutorials in person (although attendance in person is strongly recommended). The unit delivery in the semester may be changed to comply with the latest COVID-19 guidelines issued by the ACT government, and as deemed necessary by the University of Canberra.

Inclusion and engagement

Students are encouraged to contact the unit convenor early and discuss support requirements that would facilitate unit learning and successful unit completion. 

Participation requirements

It is expected that students participate in all learning opportunities in this unit, and complete all activities within the learning modules, including directed and self-directed study,
and actively participate in scheduled face to face or online sessions via the Canvas Virtual Room. Participating in class discussions to clarify concepts and to develop confidence
with professional communication and verbally expressing ideas can be helpful for students and also supports the learning of student peers. Furthermore, participation in
classroom sessions enables students to ask questions and develop professional behaviours and accountability for safe practice.

The global experience has been organised to enhance student learning and international exposure. We require students to attend these sessions in Weeks 10, 11, 12 and 13 and 
interact with global peers and academics to gain invaluable skills in cross-cultural global health. Attendance during these sessions is very important to the sucessful completion of the unit. If there is any problem, please contact the unit convenor to discuss your situation.

Required IT skills

General IT skills.

You will require computer skills to access the internet and be able to upload to the ‘Canvas' university site submissions using ‘word'
and PowerPoint formats. This unit will involve online meetings in real-time using a virtual room. To participate verbally, rather than
just typing, you will need a microphone. For best audio quality we recommend a microphone and speaker headset. For more

Global learning experience

This will be conducted online using zoom and freely available online tools to facilitate international collaboration. Please ensure you can access zoom and google to ensure that you are able to actively participate in these sessions that are being held in weeks for weeks 10, 11, 12, and 13.

In-unit costs

The Global Experience is a virtual international exchange that is facilitated between U.C. and the Indian Institute of Public Health Gandinagar. There is no cost to students to participate in this.

Work placement, internships or practicums

This unit involves work integrated learning: Simulation of cross cultural approaches to global health issues. Students must adhere to University policy during WIL activities, including the Student Conduct Rules 2018, the WIL Policy and WIL Procedure, and the Assessment Policy and Assessment Procedure.

This unit has pre-placement requirements. You must complete the following prior to commencement of your < Simulation of cross cultural approaches to global health issuest>.

As this is a virtual simulation, there are no other pre-placement requirements.
