Milestone seminars
Throughout your HDR degree there are several formal milestones seminars you are required to present to your faculty and research community.
These seminars provide you with an opportunity to present your research to date, develop your presentation skills and receive feedback on your project.
For detailed information on milestones refer to the HDR Progress and Milestones Policy and companion procedure.
When do I have to complete my milestones by?
The below dates refer to the dates which the milestones have to be completed by based on full-time enrolment.
To calculate milestone due dates for part-time enrolment, double the time period e.g. 12 months full-time is 24 months part-time.
Introductory seminar | Confirmation of candidature | Work in progress seminar | Pre-Submission Seminar | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Masters | 4 months | 7 months | n/a | 3-6 months prior to submission of the thesis |
Professional Doctorate | 6 months | 12 months | 24 months | 3-6 months prior to submission of the thesis |
PhD | 6 months | 12 months | 24 months | 3-6 months prior to submission of the thesis |
PhD Clinical Psychology | 6 months | 12 months | 30 – 36 months | 3-6 months prior to submission of the thesis |
PhD Clinical Physiotherapy | 6 months | 12 months | 24 – 30 months | 3-6 months prior to submission of the thesis |
What milestone seminars do I have to complete?
The introductory seminar is where you will outline your research project. This seminar is the “elevator pitch” of your project and is a good opportunity to practice expressing your ideas clearly and concisely.
The confirmation of candidature is an assessable seminar where you will present your research proposal. This seminar along with your written research proposal is assessed by a panel of assessors appointed by your supervisor.
The work in progress seminar is where you will present the initial findings of your research to your faculty and research community. This seminar is an opportunity to showcase how your project is going, what you’ve achieved so far, and what you have left to do.
NOTE: Only doctoral students have to do this seminar.
The pre-submission seminar is the final milestone before you submit your thesis for examination. This seminar is an opportunity to present the almost-complete version of your project and reflect on (and celebrate!) how far you and your proposal have come in the research process.
