About the course

This course will provide engineers and other professionals with an introduction to heritage principles, and the related skills to assess significance and understand conservation needs of engineering and industrial heritage sites and items.

Jointly developed by Engineering Heritage Australia and the University of Canberra the course consists of introductory online learning including an assessed report on an engineering site or item. This is followed by a onsite workshop and presentation at Army Museum, Fremantle (Western Australia).

This course can be paired with Introduction to Heritage Engineering Part 2.

Successful completion of Introduction to Heritage Engineering Parts 1 and 2, and the follow-up course Design and Implementation of Heritage Engineering Solutions will allow qualified engineers to be eligible to be accredited as Heritage Engineers and listed in the EA National Engineering Register in Heritage and Conservation Engineering.

Course presenters

Learn from industry experts

Natalie Ison

Natalie has a Bachelor of Fine Art and a Bachelor of Cultural Heritage Conservation. She completed First Class Honours at the University of Canberra in 2015. She also has a diploma in project management.

Natalie started working in the sector in 2010 and has beenemployed as an objects conservator, museum registrar, and heritage officer. Natalie currently works in the private sector as a contract conservator and also at Old Parliament House. She has been responsible for submitting their latest Heritage Management Plan and reviewing their Heritage Strategy in line with the EPBC Act 1999 and has delivered loans and objects to several exhibitions.

Claire Rowson

Claire is an objects conservator and head of the Perth division of International Conservation Services.

Mike Taylor

Chair of Engineering Heritage, Australia. Mike completed an engineering degree at UWA in 1968 and joined the Public Works Department. In 1971 he was awarded a Gledden Scholarship and completed a Master’s degree at Purdue University in Indiana, USA.

Yolanda Cool

Yolanda has been working as a facilitator connecting & advocating for heritage skills training in WA, since 2016. She has a background in Education and Museology.

Martin Silk

Martin has over 25 years’ experience in Structural Engineering in the Heritage, Residential Commercial, Industrial and Insurance sectors. He sits on the Heritage Practitioners Reference Group advising the State Government on Heritage matters concerning specialists in the field.

Attilio Mara

Attilio is a Fellow Chartered Structural, Civil, Heritage & Conservation Engineer with over 35 years of experience in the construction industry. He is a member of the Engineers Australia (EA) Structures Panel, and joined the EA Heritage Panel in 2018. Serving as the Principal Engineer of Engineering Design Consultancy since 2007, his expertise is evidenced in his work on residential developments, building refurbishment projects and heritage restorations focusing on achieving structural integrity.
