UC academic a global leader in sociology research

23 April 2018: Australia’s top-ranked sociologist, University of Canberra Centenary Professor Dr Deborah Lupton, is also a global leader in two branches of sociology research, new data has confirmed.

Analysis by League of Scholars, a Sydney-based data analytics start-up, has found Dr Lupton is ranked number one in the world in the fields of digital sociology and the sociology of health and fitness research.

Dr Lupton is also ranked second in the world for medical sociology and sociocultural theory research.

League of Scholars crunched the numbers on more than 40,000 academics in Australia and more than 1.4 million researchers globally to determine their academic impact and output.

The rankings are based on the total number of citations for academics in the past five years. As at 15 March, Dr Lupton had been cited 9,309 times since 2013.

Dr Lupton joined the University’s News and Media Research Centre in 2014. Her research and teaching incorporates sociology, media and communication and cultural studies.

She has authored or co-authored 16 books and has edited several others. Dr Lupton is a founding co-editor of respected academic journal Health.
