In this unit, students will be introduced to the concepts and importance of social activism, its history and how it has evolved to its current state. Students will also learn the function activism can play in business, both for and against organisational success. In addition to understanding the opportunities and challenges activism can provide organisations or various types, students will develop their ability to design and implement activism strategies to achieve business goals or, respond to campaigns directed against them.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Understand the basic history of activism and how it has evolved;
2. Clearly explain different activism approaches and the benefits and drawbacks of each;
3. Design strategies to suit different situations;
4. Identify the risks of activism campaigns and design mitigation strategies; and
5. Design tools to measure the effect of activism.
