This unit is the first of six, and provides a strong foundation for the discipline-specific studies in Health and Physical Education. The evolution of the sociocultural approach is explored through history, philosophy, and sociology, and the role these sub-disciplines play in shaping and determining contemporary practices in Health and Physical Education. Students are introduced to the scientific fields entrenched in Health and Physical Education, such as physiology, nutrition, biomechanics and psychology. They develop an understanding of how this scientific content knowledge can be applied by teachers adopting the sociocultural approach to learning. Scientific knowledge is applied to skill acquisition and the implementation of learning through movement. This unit initiates the reflection of effective connections between discipline theory and practice in Health and Physical Education.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Examine the sociocultural approach and how it has evolved;

2. Examine the role the sub-disciplines of history, philosophy, and sociology, play in shaping and determining contemporary practices in health and physical education;
3. Understand the impact biophysical and behavioural science has had on HPE in schools, in particular through functional human anatomy, biomechanics, principles of exercise physiology, neurology, psychology, human growth and development; and
4. Understand how scientific knowledge can be successfully applied through the sociocultural approach to assist with skill acquisition and the implementation of 'learning through movement' in an inclusive and socially just manner.

Must have passed 24 credit points.

Corequisites

Must be enrolled in 324JA Bachelor of Primary Education (Health and Physical Education), OR 330JA Bachelor of Secondary Education (Health and Physical Education).

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

All assessment items required to be submitted online must be submitted via the appropriate Canvas drop box. It is the student's responsibility to upload the correct and corresponding draft or assessment item to the right submission section. Assignments must be submitted in a format accessible to the assessor(s), as stated on the relevant canvas site. If the unit convener and/or tutor are unable to access a submission, a standard late penalty of 5% of the total marks possible for the task may be applied per day until the assignment is made accessible.

Assessment Item 1: Written Assessment Task: Quality Health and Physical Education Assignment

To be submitted online to the appropriate Canvas drop box. Approval of extenuating circumstances will be dependent upon the production of supporting documentation and at the discretion of the unit convener.

Assessment Item 2: Human Movement Science Lesson Plan

To be submitted online to the appropriate Canvas drop box. Approval of extenuating circumstances will be dependent upon the production of supporting documentation and at the discretion of the unit convener.

Assessment Item 3: Theory Online Quizzes

Each quiz should be completed online within the timeframe allocated from when each respective quiz is made available.

Assessment Item 4: Academic Integrity Module

Students are required to submit a copy of their AIM completion certificate/ badge that must have your name on it via this unit's canvas site by the specified due date and time.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Learner engagement

The workload (150 hours) breakdown for this unit is as follows:

  • Reading and private study: 50 hours
  • Online lecture and workshop participation: 50 hours
  • Assessment tasks: 50 hours

Participation requirements

Attendance at all scheduled sessions in this unit is compulsory and absences could result in a fail. All absences need to be supported by appropriate documentation (e.g. medical certificate).

Successful engagement with all learning activities in this accredited Initial Teacher Education course is necessary to demonstrate that you have met the Graduate career stage of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (AITSL, 2011).

It is recognised that sometimes absence is unavoidable. If you are absent for more than two sessions, however, your engagement with the unit could be considered unsatisfactory.

In-unit costs

There are some costs associated with this unit which are detailed below:

  1. Students are required to purchase a UC HPE polo shirt available from the student shop in Building 1. The UC HPE polo shirt is required to be worn during the school visit to Radford College in Week 7.
  2. Students are required to travel to Lake Burley Griffin in Week 9 and transport costs including parking if applicable should be factored in.

It is a requirement of this unit that students are mindful of safety considerations in the practical workshops, show appropriate behaviour and follow instructions from staff. Students should also be familiar with the safety requirements in the Australian Capital Territory Government Education PE policy document available on the Unit Canvas site: 

Theoretical foundations:  The unit has a strong theoretical foundation that informs physical education practice through the following discipline knowledge: History, philosophy, sociology, physiology, biomechanics, neurology and psychology.

Research Led Education: This unit involves research-led education. There are active researchers delivering this unit who are able to engage students in deep and active learning and transmit to students their passion for the research they are carrying out.
