This unit introduces the student to the creative potential of music technology, in particular, synthesis and sampling. It promotes a more experimental approach than previous composition units, with special focus on EDM (Electronic Dance Music) and its associated forms and production techniques. The student is allowed a greater degree of independence and freedom to break away from conventions and explore new approaches to composing, again with a focus on using technology. Through this original, experimental and innovative approach to composition, legal and ethical aspects of music composition are also explored. This unit is designed to complement Music Performance: Technology on Stage and Contemporary Musicianship: Harmonic Analysis, which are also experimental in nature and technology-focused.
