In this unit you will explore the concepts of entrepreneurship at Masters level. This involves the ability to create and recognise compelling opportunities, assume risk, attract the resources to transform opportunities into value. You will be exposed to creativity in the development of novel and useful ideas, processes and procedures as individuals and in teams working together to develop a possible successful implementation of an idea or innovation. In this journey topics covered will include entrepreneurship theory, entrepreneurship in the Australian context, intellectual property, marketing, environmental assessment, financial preparation and analysis, ethical and social responsibility, strategic planning and managing entrepreneurial growth together with the development and presentation of a business plan.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Understand and apply different forms of entrepreneurial theory and thinking in its role for ideas and sustainable, socially responsible and ethical business development in a local and global economy;
2. Investigate and report on concepts of entrepreneurship which includes the growing understanding and identification of intrapreneurship in the public and private sectors;
3. Formulate and evaluate an entrepreneurial business plan for a start-up organisation or for a new project in an established organisation; and
4. Investigate and apply alternative business structures, financing and sources of funding, and other issues for new or emerging ventures in developing and presenting a business concept proposal.

Skills development

This unit is intended to integrate theory and practice through an interview with an Entrepreneur; a practical micro-finance challenge, and; developing a business pitch/plan.  Students will develop practical knowledge, skills and attitudes required for our global post-Covid entrepreneurial environment. The Canvas site for this unit will be updated regularly and so it is important for students to constantly check all sections on the Canvas site

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

1.  All assessment items are to be submitted in Canvas by the due dates.

2.  Artificial Intelligence

Students are not permitted to use gernerative artificial intelligence (GENAI) in assessments for this unit.

GenAI may only be used in authorised ways when completing assessments at UC. This means that GenAI can only be used for an assessment when:

the Unit Convener has authorised GenAI use for that assessment
the student uses GenAI in the way that the assessment instructions allow
the student fully acknowledges their use of GenAI, with proper citations, references and a GenAI Acknowledgement Statement in line with the assessment instructions.
Where the assessment instructions do not specifically state that GenAI may be used and how, then its use is not permitted for that assessment. Students must still provide the required GenAI Acknowledgement Statement to indicate whether GenAI has or has not been used in the preparation of the assessment. If unsure, students should seek advice from the Unit Convener.

Special assessment requirements

In order to pass this unit you must complete and submit all items of assessment and achieve an overall mark of at least 50 percent.

Students must apply academic integrity in their learning and research activities at UC. This includes submitting authentic and original work for assessments and properly acknowledging any sources used.

Required IT skills

You are assumed to have adequate skills in the use of MS Word and Excel, internet browsers and search engines. You are also assumed to be familiar with Canvas. If you feel you do not have adequate skills, please discuss the matter with the unit convenor.

In-unit costs

There are no additional costs beyond unit enrolment fees and the textbook cost (only if purchased which is voluntary). However, each student must contribute an equal amount to their team for the micro-finance challenge.
