Students are required to undertake an internship placement of 75 hours under the supervision of a professional practitioner in an appropriate workplace in the community where they will be exposed to and involved in the processes of planning and implementing management activities (please note that under special arrangements it may also be possible to undertake this internship in an overseas location).

Each student is required to analyse the organisation and management practices by preparing a research report and maintaining a reflective journal throughout his/her placement.

Each student will also prepare a 5 minute electronic virtual presentation which could be used to share his/her observations and experiences with others. There are also three assessable workshop sessions held on campus where students will be exposed to services of the UC Careers office, professional practices and relevant theories. It is expected students would have completed the module, Thinking Like a Professional, in the compulsory BGL foundation Level 1 unit, Problem Analysis and Statistics (PAS) or an equivalent where students have articulated into UC or are from another UC faculty.


Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Understand the relationships between politics and policy theories and actual professional practice through self-directed learning;

2. Analyse actual politics and policy related practices and identify how politics and policy could be improved;
3. Working individually and in groups communicate their experience both orally and in written form, with confidence and clarity; and
4. Demonstrate entrepreneurial skills including creativity, initiative, critical thinking, adaptability, leadership, and resourcefulness.

As previously mentioned it is essential that you make it your habit to continually check the unit's website for workshop dates, times and information - these will be updated regularly.

Ms Erin Stacey, our Work Integrated Learning specialist from the UC Career's Office will also be available with any concerns or assistance required in obtaining an internship. You are strongly encouraged to meet with Erin or the unit conveners at least twice throughout your internship. Academic integrity

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Participation requirements

Before the first day at your placement each student is expected to complete the "InPlace" software programme found on the Moodle website for this unit with all details of their placement including the  business name; supervisor's name, addresses, email address, dates of internship etc before your Internship commences. If approved by the unit convener an email will be sent to both your supervisor and yourself indicating confirmation or not.

Required IT skills

You are assumed to have adequate skills in the use of word processing and spreadsheet programs, Internet browsers and search engines. If you feel you do not have adequate skills, please discuss the matter with the unit convenor.

In-unit costs

No additional costs, beyond your travel & accommodation expenses to host organisations and the normal unit enrolment fee are anticipated. Faculty specific internships (eg Finance students with NAB) maybe required to pay a special fee on application (please see your work supervisor for details if this applies to you).

Work placement, internships or practicums

This unit involves an on or off campus Internship under the supervision of a workplace supervisor and therefore, additional student responsibilities are required in addition to those described in this section. Work-place learning requires strict adherence to professional practice principles and ethics. Business confidentiality must always be maintained, including for assessment items such as reports, essays and presentations. Please discuss this with your supervisor/unit convener before producing assessment items.

Where required and if necessary, further details of items mentioned in this unit outline will be supplied via your Canvas website. Unit-wide notices given via Canvas are deemed to be given to each and every student enrolled in the unit. Please don't forget that you must complete your placement details (to include business name; address; contact/supervisor addresses; dates etc using "InPlace" that can be found as an icon on your unit or UC website. Please keep a regular eye on "InPlace" and your UC email for any queries the Convener may have regarding your placement until you receive the final approval email. The unit convener will then determine if your placement should be approved or not and if approved send an email to both your Supervisor and yourself indicating this official approval.
