On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:1. Critically evaluate appropriate quantitative methodologies and their application to correctly address the specific research question;
2. Address and improve validity and reliability in quantitative research;
3. Demonstrate practical application of data analysis, using an appropriate methodological approach and supporting software and reflect on strengths and weaknesses of different data analysis strategies; and
4. Apply the methodological principles from conception to communication to a specific research project.
Graduate attributes
1. UC graduates are professional - communicate effectively1. UC graduates are professional - employ up-to-date and relevant knowledge and skills

3. UC graduates are lifelong learners - reflect on their own practice, updating and adapting their knowledge and skills for continual professional and academic development
Skills development
Please note that it may take up to 2 working days to reply to emails.
As such, requests for extensions or special consideration should be submitted well in advance of deadlines.
Emails containing questions that are addressed either (a) within this unit outline, or (b) within the Canvas site may simply be redirected back to this unit outline.

Submission of assessment items
Special assessment requirements
To obtain an overall pass grade in this unit, the student must:
- Attempt all assessment items; and
- Obtain an overall aggregate mark of 50%.
Academic integrity
Students have a responsibility to uphold University standards on ethical scholarship. Good scholarship involves building on the work of others and use of others' work must be acknowledged with proper attribution made. Cheating, plagiarism, and falsification of data are dishonest practices that contravene academic values. Refer to the University's Student Charter for more information.
To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. You can access this module within UCLearn (Canvas) through the 'Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism' link in the Study Help site.
Use of Text-Matching Software
The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.
Moderation
Moderation of assessment items:
All assessment items, including exams, are internally reviewed and moderated before they are published in unit outlines, listed on canvas, or printed out for the final exam period. This review of assessment items is performed by another academic within the same field who has a good understanding of the subject matter and is be done as part of the unit curriculum review.
Moderation of marking:
There is a random selection of assessment items that are moderated in a unit, including all failed assignments (excluding exams). The moderation of passing assessment items is based on a sample chosen randomly, on a percentage basis at different grade levels or the full range of submitted items to develop a common view about performance.
Extensions
Students can apply for an extension to the submission due date for an assessment item due to extenuating, evidenced circumstances (specific details are found in the Assessment Procedures). An extension must be applied for before the due date. Documentary evidence (e.g. medical certificate) will be expected for an extension to be granted, however this will not guarantee that the application will be successful. The Unit Convener or relevant Program Director/Course Convener will decide whether to grant an extension and the length of the extension.
An Assignment Extension form is available from the Student Forms page.
Late Submission
Late submission of assignments without an approved extension will result in a penalty of 5% reduced marks from the total available, per calendar day late. An assignment submitted over 7 days late will not be accepted.
Learner engagement
Students are expected to actively engage in this unit through Discussion pages, completing all online tasks and participating in the Canvas discussion forums and activities (e.g., Peer Feedback).
Participation requirements
Students are expected to actively engage in this unit through Discussion pages, completing all online tasks and participating in ALL the Canvas discussion forums and activities.

In-unit costs
Students who choose to purchase statistical software other than that which is provided by the University of Canberra will need to cover that cost themselves. We note that there also also free and/or open source statistical software packages available.
Work placement, internships or practicums
This unit is designed to support the design of quantitative resarch projects, for example within PhDs and MRes degrees. That frames the interpretation of WIL in this unit.
Additional information
Academic Language: Academic writing style and language must be maintained throughout the unit, and within the unit Canvas forums
Clarity and Expression: Concepts should be analysed and discussed without unnecessary verbiage. Written work must demonstrate correct grammatical expression and spelling. Poor grammar obscures meaning in your discussion.
Use of resources: you are expected to read widely and use a variety of credible evidence to support your discussions. Your work must be supported by current published literature and fully referenced. Resources must not be limited to texts only. It is an expectation that you use database searches to obtain recent journal articles.
Referencing requirements: Please refer to the Academic Skills Program website for information on acknowledging sources in academic writing. Students are required to use APA 6th edition referencing style, see the following links:
