This unit provides support in the development of mathematical skills essential to the pursuit of studies in science at tertiary level. It will include skills in interpreting data using mathematical techniques. It will provide development of mathematical skills including algebra, logarithms, trigonometric functions, statistics and calculus, and their application to scientific problems.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will gain:
1. An understanding of basic mathematical techniques including the use of algebra, trigonometric functions, logarithms and statistics;
2. An understanding of mathematical functions that can be applied to scientific contexts;
3. Skills in the application of mathematical techniques to solving science problems and interpreting data; and
4. Skills in conducting effective discussions with peers and staff in a way that maximises their understanding of scientific ideas that involve mathematical applications.

Submission of assessment items

All assessment items must be written in your own words. Suspected plagiarism from other sources or other students' work will be very heavily penalized and could result in a FAIL grade. 

The University's position is that artificial intelligence (AI) services must not to be used for assessment or assessment preparation by students unless explicitly allowed in the assessment instructions for an assessment task. As no assessment items in this unit allow the use of AI, the submission of your assessments will be considered a declaration by you that it is entirely your own work (or that of your group for group assessments), and has been prepared without the assistance of anyone else or the use of AI programs including but not limited to ChatGPT, Quillbot, Wordtune, Tome and DALL-E. 

Special assessment requirements

The final mark for this subject will be calculated by an accumulation of marks from each assessment item. Students must attempt and submit all assessment items to pass this unit Including:

Weekly Homework Exersises (20%) + Mid-semester test (30%) + Maths Problem Solving Assignment (15%) + Final Assessment (35%) = 100%

Additionally you must achieve at least 40% in the final assessment to pass the unit.

To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Learner engagement

The contact hours for each student consists of 72 hours of workshops classes for this unit. The remaining 78 hours of the nominal workload should be used to prepare for workshops and assessments.

Participation requirements

Students should attend all classes.  As a guideline, students with less than 85% attendance are placing their studies at risk as students with poor attendance will find it difficult to keep up with the workload.
