The focus of the unit is demonstrate the social media technologies being used in organisations for business, civic and social purposes. Use of information and communications technologies is also essential in supporting networked, dialogic learning, and the addition of emerging digital tools (Twitter, blogs, wikis, Facebook) may enable rapid communication, collaboration and engagement with government, commence and society. We will look at tools and their application in different domains. It will equip learners with skills to engage online including online strategies, management, risk, and governance issues. Topics may deal with the role of social technologies in organisations, models and frameworks of online participation to understand meaningful approaches to online engagement, regardless of the specific tools or social media used. Lastly ethical concerns and changing expectations of using social technologies in organisation will be explored.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Build a relevant set of digital literacy skills that focus on learning how to use different social media channels and use digital tools to participate in civic engagement;

2. Analyse and evaluate personal social media technology usage, online strategies, risk management and governance; and
3. Use frameworks and strategies of online engagement and relationship building for business, government and not-for-profits.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

Students should keep a copy of all assessment items that are submitted at least until unit grades have been published at the end of semester. The unit convenor reserves the right to question students on any of their submitted work for moderation and academic integrity purposes, which may result in an adjustment to the marks awarded for a specific task.

Special assessment requirements

All items of assessment must be satisfactorily completed in order to be eligible for a passing grade. Failure to submit any single piece of assessment will result in failure in the unit. You will not fail if you don't submit one of the quizzes. 

Your overall grade is determined by the sum of your marks for each of your assessment items.  In order to pass this unit, students have to obtain a mark of 50% or greater for the assessment as a whole. Higher grades will be awarded on the basis of the total mark being ≥ 65% for a credit, ≥ 75% for a distinction and ≥ 85% for a high distinction. Section 9 of the UC Assessment Policy (https://guard.canberra.edu.au/policy/policy.php?pol_id=3243) describes grades and their numerical equivalents. Some scaling of marks and academic judgment may be applied to determine students' final grades - in this process no student will be disadvantaged.

In the case of any assignment that places you in jeopardy of a Fail in the whole unit, appropriate moderation procedures will be used.

The assessment items in this unit are meant to assess your understanding and application of the subject material. You are expected to apply and demonstrate this knowledge in all assessment items.

If there is any doubt with regard to the requirements of any assignment or assessment procedure, the onus for clarifying the issue rests with the student who should contact the lecturer about the matter. Students should keep a copy of all assessment items that are submitted at least until unit grades have been published at the end of the semester.

Referencing requirements:

In all submitted written work, the referencing should comply with the author-date, 'Harvard' referencing style, as outlined in the University Library Citation Guide available at: 

http://canberra.libguides.com/referencing 

Any work that has not been appropriately referenced, or has not made a reasonable attempt to follow the Harvard referencing style will be returned unmarked for resubmission. In such cases, the maximum mark that will be attainable will be 60% of the marks allocated to that assessment item.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Module participation and reflection is based on the weekly task completion. You need to be active in the online discussion during the weeks that have module participation and reflection by actively participating in the online discussion. Materials will be posted in Canvas.

Your participation in lectures, workshops, and online activities will enhance your understanding of the unit content and therefore the quality of your assessment responses. Lack of participation may result in your inability to satisfactorily pass assessment items.
