This unit introduces the therapeutic relationship and the biopsychosocial models of injury.
Simple assessment and therapies for injury and dysfunction are introduced. The unit emphasises the phases of injury, inflammation and tissue healing as a framework for choosing and applying therapies.
Learning outcomesOn completion of this unit students will be able to:
1. Explain injury and dysfunction in terms of problems and principles for management;
2. Demonstrate an understanding of musculoskeletal injury and the stages of healing and be able to explain these in scientific as well as lay terms;
3. Select and apply appropriate management for a simple acute injury, such as rest, ice, compression and elevation;
4. Select and apply simple and appropriate management for a chronic injury, such as massage and stretching;
5. Demonstrate manual skills necessary for simple injury management, such as manual handling, palpation skills and safety; and
6. Explain and demonstrate respect for client care and dignity, cultural sensitivity, consent and communication skills.

Braun MB, Simonson SJ. Introduction to Massage Therapy. 3 ed. Philadelphia, P.A.: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins; 2014.- for weeks 9-12. This has very nice descriptions of soft tissue anatomy. It describes the massage skills we will be learning.

Invest in an anatomy text book. We recommend Netter's anatomy. It has the required bones, muscles, ligaments and nerves. Many anatomy books miss out on the ligaments, and given how many ligament injuires physiotherapists treat, they are rather important. It will be used in Orthopaedics in year 2 also.
These books are available in the university library and at the Co-Op Bookshop.

Use of Text-Matching Software
The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.
The Discipline of Physiotherapy adheres to the UC moderation policy. A copy of the Physiotherapy moderation procedures can be provided on rqeuest to the unit convenor. Moderation processes are completed to make sure assessment pieces and marks are equitable and consistent.
This unit has lectures and practical classes.
Material from lectures and pracs is assessable in both the viva exams and written exams.
To prepare for viva exams students will be required to practice skills with each other in their own time, in order to become proficient in the necessary practical skills. These skills will be examined in Viva 1 and Viva 2.
While 9304 Introduction to Physiotherapy has 5 face to face teaching hours, a further 5 hours per week comprising preparation, study, reading and skills practice is expected.
Inclusion and engagement
The practice of physiotherapy requires students to act as a therapist and a patient for practice.
1. Male and female students need to be practiced at working together. Physiotherapists are required to assess and treat all patients regardless of gender, religion, culture and origin, without bias and prejudice. This is a requirement of our Code of Conduct.
2. Students must be prepared to dress or undress according to the practice requirements, within the physiotherapy code of conduct and ethical practice. Application of physiotherapy requires hands on application to a range of part of the body. For example, massage can be applied to the arms, legs and back. Ice can be applied to thigh or shoulder and other parts of the body as required. This means removing clothing to examine and treat those parts of the body. Students will be notified when requirements to undress are made, so they can bring shorts, crop tops or other suitable clothing to allow the practice of physiotherapy while maintaining appropriate modesty.
3. The practice of physiotherapy requires physical and emotional strength and resilience. Please notify your unit convenor if you have any injury or impairment that may impair your practice, or your capacity to act as a patient for other students. Your safety is important.
This Unit contains participatory elements which are vital to the professional learning outcomes for this unit. Except in the case of extenuating circumstances, 100% attendance is expected at all lectures, and 100% participation is required in all tutorials and practicals.
Permission to miss class: If absence from class is sought (for example, representative-level sporting comitments and significant appointments), then written permission should be obtained from the unit convenor. It is expected that students unable to attend classes will inform the Unit Convenor as soon as practical by email. Consideration will be given for illness; however evidence such as a medical certificate or letter from a coach may be required if more than one class is missed.
Required IT skills
Students will be expected to have access to a computer and internet. Word processing skills to write an essay, and internet searching skills, example google scholar are expected.
