This unit introduces students to the fundamentals of evidence-based nutrition. The basic principles of healthy eating are covered with a focus on energy, macronutrients and selected micronutrients. Approaches to assessing the food and nutrient intake of individuals are introduced. Influences on food availability and food consumption and the role of key organisations involved in food regulation and nutrition policy are identified.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Explain key functions, food sources and requirements of specified nutrients;
2. Examine and effectively employ methods to assess food and nutrient intake of individuals;
3. Select, appraise and explain nutrition evidence;
4. Propose strategies to improve the nutritional health of individuals; and
5. Explain factors that affect food availability and consumption.

Submission of assessment items

Special assessment requirements

To pass the unit, students must attain at least 50 marks overall.

No assessment tasks are compulsory - however students need to ensure they have accumulated sufficient marks in total to pass the unit.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Moderation and Repeat Students

Moderation of Assessment

This unit will be moderated as per Faculty of Health Moderation Guidelines. A copy is available via Canvas.

Repeat students

Repeat students are required to comply with the unit requirements to pass the unit. Marks from a previous attempt at Introductory Nutrition cannot be carried over to a subsequent attempt.

Participation requirements

Students are responsible for keeping up to date with all lecture and tutorial content each week.

All lectures will be provided as recordings only for this unit - there will be no face-to-face lectures delivered this semester.

Students are strongly encouraged to attend face-to-face tutorials. All learning activities will be provided on Canvas so students can keep up if they miss a class due to illness etc. In situations where students are unable to attend a tutorial, an online tutorial summary will be delivered each week. This will summarise key learnings from each tutorial and provide students with the opportunity to ask questions. It will not fully replicate a face-to-face tutorial.

Students are expected to check the Canvas site regularly for updates and announcements. Students should also regularly check their student email.

 

Required IT skills
