This unit will introduce students to the basic theory and philosophical underpinnings of criminology in Australia. Students will learn about the major schools of thought in criminology as well as the different methodological approaches to the study of criminology. The unit examines the question 'what is crime' and provides detailed analysis of particular crime types and the social context in which crime occurs.
1. demonstrate an understanding of the role that criminological debate takes in the justice system;
2. evaluate the contribution of major strands in criminological thinking to current issues in the justice sector.
Learning outcomes
