The aim of this unit is to enable students to critically analyse the different theoretical and practical aspects of educational leadership and organizational changes within a constantly shifting reform environment. The unit explores and analyses a range of theories and emerging approaches and understandings of leadership, including distributed leadership, strategic leadership, ethical leadership, leadership for learning, and comparative, inter-cultural understandings of leadership. This unit provides an opportunity for students to reflect upon what constitutes effective leadership in educational settings and to construct their own 'theories' of effective leadership. Students will develop conceptual and practical skills for the effective management of change in schools and other educational institutions.

The required text for the unit is;
Brooks, J. & Normore, A. (2018) Foundations of Educational .Leadership, Routledge, New York.
All other required readings can be located on E-Reserve, either through our Canvas site, or through the Library's site.
Submission of assessment items

Approval of extenuating circumstances will be dependent upon producing supporting documentation and at the discretion of the unit convener.
All assessment items required to be submitted online must be submitted via the appropriate Canvas drop box. It is the student's responsibility to upload the correct and corresponding draft or assessment item to the right submission section. Assignments must be submitted in a format accessible to the assessor(s), as stated on the relevant canvas site. If the unit convener and/or tutor are unable to access a submission, a standard late penalty of 5% of the total marks possible for the task may be applied per day until the assignment is made accessible.
All assessment items shoud be sumbitted as word documents, except for PowerPoints

To enhance understanding of academic integrity, all students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity Module (AIM) at least once during their course of study. You can access this module within UCLearn (Canvas) through the 'Academic Integrity and Avoiding Plagiarism' link in the Study Help site.
Use of Text-Matching Software
The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Attendance at three day intensive workshops is stongly encouraged, missed attendance will require documention presented to the unit convener, to meet the unit requirements.
Your participation in both class and online activities will enhance your understanding of the unit content and therefore the quality of your assessment responses. Lack of participation may result in your inability to satisfactorily pass assessment item and the unit. .
Required IT skills
This unit requires basic IT skills, which are required for all units here at the University of Canberra. Students should be comfortable searching the library's databases and reading academic articles online, as well as browsing the Internet and being able to determine credible websites.

Foundation of Unit
This unit has been created and designed with the assumption that all enrolled are interested and aspire to become effective education leaders and that they have had some kind of experience in education organisations.
Provision of information to the group
Notifications through the Canvas Forum or the Canvas Discussion Forums are deemed to be made to the whole class. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they check for announcements on the Unit's Canvas website (Canvas forum messages are also emailed to student email addresses only). Students should ensure they check their student email regularly (once every 24 hours during the week). The Canvas discussion forums will be checked by staff regularly.
Use of student email account
The University Email policy states that "students wishing to contact the University via email regarding administrative or academic matters need to send the email from the University account for identity verification purposes". Therefore all unit enquiries should be emailed using a student university email account. Students should contact firstname.lastname@example.org if they have any issues accessing their university email account.
In all cases of absence, sickness or personal problems it is the student's responsibility to ensure that the unit Convener is informed.
Theoretical foundations: This unit covers a range of theoretical foundations which underpin educational leadership inclduing cultural capital theory.
Research Led Education:
This unit involves research-led education. There are active researchers delivering this unit who are able to engage students in deep and active learning and transmit to students their passion for the research they are carrying out. My own research into leadership in Eduation also infroms the content of this unit, espeically in regard to the role of school principals.
