Heritage Philosophy and Ethics (8943.3)

This unit will examine the underpinning philosophies and ethical implications of heritage, museums and conservation practices around the world. It will also examine how these are reflected in international legal frameworks, treaties, codes and charters. Key themes explored include authenticity, heritage as social action, tourism, and Indigenous rights. Students undertaking this unit will demonstrate their understanding of these issues through problem oriented research and participation in practice-based decision-making scenarios.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the main codes of ethics for cultural heritage;
2. Critically analyse heritage philosophies and ethics in their cultural context; and
3. Demonstrate capacity to apply ethical approaches in a range of different contexts.
