Skills development
The unit consists of modules that introduce students to basic skills and knowledge in music, media arts, visual art, dance and drama. As the student gains confidence in their own arts practice and an understanding of arts concepts, they will examine children’s learning in art and music.
On completion of the unit the student will be able to demonstrate basic skills in music, media arts, visual art, dance and drama and understanding of arts concepts; and designing learning experiences for children in music, media arts, visual art, dance and drama at the early childhood/primary level.

Submission of assessment items
Extensions & Late submissions
Submission: All assignments will be submitted via the Moodle site
Late Submission: Late submission of assignments without an approved extension will result in a penalty of 5% reduced marks from the total available, per calendar day late. An assignment submitted over 7 days late will not be accepted. Approval of extenuating circumstances will be dependent upon the production of supporting documentation and at the discretion of the unit convener.

Use of Text-Matching Software
The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.
Participation requirements
Your participation in class activities will enhance your understanding of the unit content and therefore the quality of your assessment responses. Lack of participation may result in your inability to satisfactorily pass assessment items.

Research led Units
This unit involves research-led education. There are active researchers delivering this unit who are able to engage students in deep and active learning and transmit to students their passion for the research they are carrying out. All of the Bedrock texts have been based on the latest national and international research into arts education and pre-service teachers.
Provision of information to the group
Notifications through the Moodle Announcements Forum or the Moodle Discussion Forums are deemed to be made to the whole class. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that they check for announcements on the Unit's Moodle website (Moodle forum messages are also emailed to student email addresses only). Students should ensure they check their student email regularly. The Moodle discussion forums will be checked by staff regularly.
Use of student email account
The University Email policy states that "students wishing to contact the University via email regarding administrative or academic matters need to send the email from the University account for identity verification purposes". Therefore all unit enquiries should be emailed using a student university email account. Students should contact servicedesk@canberra.edu.au if they have any issues accessing their university email account.
Keeping the unit convener informed
In all cases of absence, sickness or personal problems it is the student's responsibility to ensure that the unit convenor is informed. The minimum participation requirement must be met in order to pass the unit (regardless of supporting documentation).
Children in tutorials and seminars
Children of students enrolled in Arts Education Graduate Entry are welcome to attend tutorials if no other appropriate childcare is available. Each child's attendance is on the proviso that the child's presence does not disrupt the learning experience for their parent or other tutorials participants. Please inform the unit convener and tutor if you intend to bring children to tutorials.
Theoretical Foundation of Unit
Arts education is founded on the theoretical basis of experiential learning, otherwise known as "learning through doing", in the form of art as a vehicle for the development of critical thinking, aesthetic understanding and creation, cultural sensitivity and emotional development. This theoretical framework is based on the work of Elliot Eisner, John Dewey and Donald Schon.
