This unit follows on from Introduction to Chemistry and extends on the foundations of chemistry enabling later studies in chemistry and biochemistry. Topics covered are atomic structure and chemical periodicity, bonding, oxidation and reduction, acids and bases, precipitation reactions, titrations, phase diagrams, solutions, gas laws, and structure and functionality in organic chemistry. These important basic principles and concepts are developed using pertinent examples and special topics that highlight the everyday applications of chemistry.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate good laboratory practice when working with chemicals either individually or in a group setting;
2. Apply skills in setting up simple experiments to understand some of the important basic chemical principles; and
3. Demonstrate skills in predicting the chemical behaviours of a variety of elements and compounds from their understanding of the structure and reactivity of matter.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

Weekly homework will be submitted electronically through Macmillan Learn, all other assessment items except the Final Assessment are to be submitted in hard copy. It is strongly recommended that you have an electronic back up copy. The Final Assessment will be submitted through Canvas.

The University's position is that artificial intelligence (AI) services must not to be used for assessment or assessment preparation by students unless explicitly allowed in the assessment instructions for an assessment task. As no assessment items in this unit allow the use of AI, the submission of your Assessments will be considered a declaration by you that it is entirely your own work (or that of your group for group assessments), and has been prepared without the assistance of anyone else or the use of AI programs including but not limited to ChatGPT, Quillbot, Wordtune, Tome, Bard and DALL-E.

Special assessment requirements

It is compulsory for students to attend all tutorials, workshops and all laboratory sessions. If a student is unable to attend due to illness or other extenuating circumstances, a medical certificate or other appropriate supporting documentation must be supplied to the unit convener prior to, or within three days after the missed session. Failure to attend at least 80% of the tutorials (9/11 classes), workshops (10/12 classes) and laboratory sessions (9/11 classes) without a medical certificate or similar documentation can result in failure in the unit.

The final mark for this subject will be calculated by an accumulation of marks from each assessment item listed below:

Total 100%

In order to pass this unit, students are required to:

1. Achieve a mark of at least 40% in the final assessment; and

2. Obtain a mark of 50% or better overall.

Students are encouraged to consult the unit convenor for any special considerations in relation to assessment requirements. Without prior arrangement or consultation with the unit convenor, penalties for late submission or "no-show" at assessment times will be imposed. Extensions for assignment work must be applied for through the unit convenor.

Supplementary assessment

Students in their last semester of study may be eligible to sit a supplementary exam or assessment to gain a pass grade. This opportunity is available only if

  • student’s mark in that unit is 45% or above but less than the pass mark
  • the unit is their last unit to complete the Diploma.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

 

 

Learner engagement

The 150 hours include time spent in classes. The unit occupies a total of 15 weeks including the examination period.  Therefore it is expected that you should spend about 10 hours per week for this unit.  This might be broken up as follows:

Participation requirements

Students should attend all classes. 

Your participation in both class and online activities will enhance your understanding of the unit content and therefore the quality of your assessment responses. Lack of participation may result in your inability to satisfactorily pass assessment items.

Participation in laboratory/practical classes is a compulsory condition of this unit, and attendance will be recorded. The pre-lab quizzes on canvas must be completed prior to attending each laboratory/practical session.   You must participate in at least 80% of laboratory and tutorial classes to pass this unit (ie. at least 10 out of 12 classes). In the event that you cannot attend your assigned laboratory class due to illness or unavoidable commitments, contact the Unit Convener as soon as possible.

Required IT skills

You should know how to navigate on-line websites and be able to use standard software packages such as Word and Excel.

In-unit costs

This is a HECS supported unit. However, Student Services and Amenities (SSAF) fees must be paid prior to the census date.

This unit involves working in a Chemistry laboratory. Lab safety requirements are in the lab manual and on-line in Canvas.

Unforeseen circumstances beyond the unit convener's control could result in changes to the mode of delivery of lectures, tutorials and practicals (where applicable) and assessments. Students will be advised if this occurs and appropriate alternatives will be arranged.
