It is advised that students complete Introduction to Chemistry before attempting Chemistry 1.

Textbook preferred for this level is "Chemistry" 5th ed by Rob Lewis and Wynne Evans.

Submission of assessment items

Weekly homework will be submitted electronically through Canvas, all other assessment items are to be submitted in hard copy. It is strongly recommended that you have an electronic back up copy.
Special assessment requirements
The final mark for this subject will be calculated by an accumulation of marks from each assessment item.
In order to pass this unit, students are required to:
1. Achieve a mark of at least 40 % in the final exam; and
2. Obtain a mark of 50 % or better overall.
3. Participate in at least 80% of laboratory and tutorial classes (i.e. at least 10 out of 12 classes).
Students are encouraged to consult the unit convenor for any special considerations in relation to assessment requirements. Without prior arrangement or consultation with the unit convenor, penalties for late submission or "no-show" at assessment times will be imposed. Extensions for assignment work must be applied for through the unit convenor.

Students in their last semester of study may be eligible to sit a supplementary exam or assessment to gain a pass grade. This opportunity is available only if
- student's mark in that unit is 45% or above but less than the pass mark
- the unit is their last unit to complete the Diploma.
The contact hours for each student consists of 72 hours of lectures and laboratory classes for this unit. The remaining 78 hours of the nominal workload should be used to prepare for lectures, laboratories and assessments.
Students should attend all classes.
Your participation in both class and online activities will enhance your understanding of the unit content and therefore the quality of your assessment responses. Lack of participation may result in your inability to satisfactorily pass assessment items.
Participation in laboratory/practical classes is a compulsory condition of this unit, and attendance will be recorded. You must participate in at least 80% of laboratory and tutorial classes to pass this unit (ie. at least 10 out of 12 classes). In the event that you cannot attend your assigned laboratory class due to illness or unavoidable commitments, contact the Unit Convener as soon as possible to negotiate an alternate lab class later in the week (if available).
Required IT skills
You should know how to navigate on-line websites and be able to use standard software packages such as Word and Excel.
This is a HECS supported unit. However, Student Services and Amenities (SSAF) fees must be paid prior to the census date.
Work placement, internships or practicums
This unit involves working in a Chemistry laboratory. Lab safety requirements are in the lab manual and on-line in Canvas.
Unforeseen circumstances beyond the unit convener's control could result in changes to the mode of delivery of lectures, tutorials and practicals (where applicable) and assessments. Students will be advised if this occurs and appropriate alternatives will be arranged.
