This unit introduces some of the basic processes exhibited by living organisms. This unit follows on from Introduction to Biology and extends on the foundations of biology enabling later studies in areas related to the life sciences. The subject examines the characteristics of living organisms and the structure of cells; energy flow, nutrition and metabolism; information storage and gene expression; and reproduction and inheritance. Emphasis is placed on the relevance of these processes to the human model as well as ecological and environmental systems.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate skills in applying knowledge of some basic concepts in biology in the area of cell organisation, metabolism, reproduction and inheritance;
2. Apply skills in the interpretation of biological phenomena;
3. Apply skills in the collection, recording, analysis and interpretation of biological data;
4. Apply skills in effective written and oral communication; and
5. Apply skills in the design and conduct of simple experiments.

It is the University's position is that artificial intelligence (AI) services must not to be used for assessment or assessment preparation by students unless explicitly allowed in the assessment instructions for an assessment task. As no assessment items in this unit allow the use of AI, the submission of your Assessments will be considered a declaration by you that it is entirely your own work (or that of your group for group assessments), and has been prepared without the assistance of anyone else or the use of AI programs including but not limited to ChatGPT, Quillbot, Wordtune, Tome, Bard and DALL-E. 

Special assessment requirements

The final mark for this subject will be calculated by an accumulation of marks from each assessment item. The details are stated in Section 5a of the unit outline.

In order to pass the unit, students must:

1. Achieve a mark of at least 40% on the Final Assessment and an overall final mark of at least 50%

2. Attempt all of the following assessment items: Laboratory Journal, Group Lesson, News Article, Final Assessment and Drosophila report

3. Participate in at least 80% of practical sessions, unless extenuating circumstances prevent this. Students should notify the convener when laboratory sessions are missed, and provide documentation for missed sessions.

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Learner engagement

The 150 hours include time spent in classes. The unit occupies a total of 15 weeks including the examination period.  Therefore it is expected that you should spend about 10 hours per week for this unit.  This might be broken up as follows:

Participation requirements

Attendance at all practical sessions is compulsory. If students are unable to attend a session due to ill-health or extenuating circumstances, it is important that the student contacts the unit convener, and supplies appropriate documentation for laboratory sessions that are missed. It is expected that students will have attended at least 80% of laboratory sessions.

Required IT skills

Knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint software is required.
