This unit builds on the generic and academic skills student develop in Problem Analysis and Statistics. It is applied across all the Faculty of Business and Government undergraduate degrees. 50% of the unit will be quantitative based research methods, which will enable students to analyse primary data in order to make more effective and evidence based decisions. The other 50% of the unit syllabus will be qualitative enabling research design and application in order to gather and analyse primary data for problem evaluation and resolution.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Determine what primary data needs to be collected in order to provide an appropriate evidence base for a decision;

2. Understand the implications of alternative methods of data collection and interpretation and use this for determining appropriate data collection;
3. Develop research designs for the collection of quantitative and/or qualitative data;
4. Analyse and interpret data collected across a variety of units in order to select strategies and plans; and
5. Summarise and present complex data graphically and statistically either manually or by computer package.

8732 Problem Analysis and Statistics OR 6540 Introduction to Statistics for students enrolled in Bachelor of Sport Management, 688AA.

Submission of assessment items

Extensions & Late submissions

Late submissions of the qualitative research group report will incur a penalty of 5% per day after the submission deadline. Please note: late submissions of this report will not be accepted after the 4th Novemeber.

If students believe they have grounds for an extension they must discuss this with the unit convenor in person (request a meeting or attend a drop-in session), please do not email your request). Extensions must be agreed upon in advance of the due date and will only be granted where documentary evidence is provided to the unit convenor. Only the unit convenor may grant extensions. Extension requests received after the due date of assessment items will not be considered except where there are extenuating circumstances as judged by the unit convenor. Please use the following extension request from:

Use of Text-Matching Software

The University of Canberra uses text-matching software to help students and staff reduce plagiarism and improve understanding of academic integrity. The software matches submitted text in student assignments against material from various sources: the internet, published books and journals, and previously submitted student texts.

Participation requirements

All conditions below must be met in order to pass the unit overall:

  • A minimum overall mark of 50 / 100 is required in order to pass the unit.
  • A minimum mark for the exam of 45 / 100 is required in order to pass the unit.
  • All assessments must be attempted in order to pass the unit. Failure to do so will result in a fail (NC) grade.

Basic familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint.
